Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    So, hi again guys,

I decided to "give up" and i'm sending my MacBook to be reballed.

If it goes bad, well..I'll have to settle down and wait till Apple decides to do something.

    So, I'll keep you posted.

    Keep fighting guys.

I tweet every day to Tim Cook and some other important Apple figures, giving them statistics of this thread.

    We won't give up!

I just wonder, if i decide to buy a new Imac for home with Apple care, will they accept to replace the logic board in my mbp for free and give me 1 year warranty?

only Apple can answer to that question.

I know I did ask the rep from Ireland on the phone similar question a while back, guess what the answer was, nope.

might get a 100€ discount for buying one though, no discount for repair.

    *****

It seems that Apple does not want to know how bad is... Perhaps they cause insomnia to the financial department.

I think a site outside Apple's servers would be a better idea. Maybe a specialized magazine. Someone neutral.

    "6244 needed."

For what?  What happens if another 6,244 people sign the petition?  Does Tim become "it"?  Does Apple acquiesce?  Does another random survey appear?

I'm tempted to set up another survey - "how points gatherers can antagonise 2011 users who's loyalty to the brand is being tested enough as it is already over this GPU fault."

Or you and your gang can discuss this freely over on macrumors.  I will give this 2 minutes before your friends remove it, but it is all of you and not only the manufacturer who should hang your heads in shame.

thanks, but in order to install that I need to be able to get to my desktop...  My computer boots up, I log in with my password but then it just goes to blank white/gray screen.  Any idea how I can get past this, at least for just a minute to accesss my files?

Can you boot into target mode? That is, start up holding 't', connect through firewire or thunderbolt...

@GavMackem Agreed. I am beginning to wonder if they are somehow paid apple to troll the boards to favour apple.

As you know, surveys are banned by the terms of use for this site, the same terms you already agreed to. It will (most likely case) removed.
