Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

How can I block the constant flow of Off-Topic-Comments by Csound1?

Hi, I'm in Switzerland and my replaced GPU / logic Board is all ready showing first glitches while just watching videos... Since Apple isn't able to solve the problem other than having trolls like Csound1 commenting here, can you name me a reballer service in Switzerland?

If you wish to keep polluting this thread with uninformed nonsense staying off topic from solutions to this issue then please carry on, it will make others research into the hundreds of vacuous posts you have posted on this thread bar a few exceptions a much easier task to accomplish.

If you are capable of leaving this thread alone without making some valid contributions, like the odd one about the UK SOGA we the community might actually be able to help each other over this by finding true solutions to really difficult problems such as the Pandora's box this GPU topic certainly is. Then we might just get that help achieved sooner by staying totally on topic as we should have been a year ago.

The off topic posts hopefully will be solved soon, we all have to be patient!

So far I have no information about Switzerland, but a few posts back there was someone in Berlin.  It will take a few days at the very least to start getting lists together as this is just the beginning.

Real life and kids beckon, hopefully I will have some details of agents across the world to start creating a thread over on macrumors later tonight.

And now I have blown the second Motherboard. No I haven't blown it but as the readers of this thread have already guessed it, I my GPU has failed again. 96 days after I had the first replacement. Will go back to the Apple Store and see what they can do as this **** thing is 6 days after initial 90 days warranty of the $310 depot product.

If you are interested in my original post then it is here somewhere in the thread. Please look it up. I am just too disappointed and defeated by Apple. This has gone too long and Apple isn't going to do crap about it. I gotta just realize and accept it and make changes accordingly.

Which issue? the one afflicting 2011 15" Mbps, or the one affecting the 13" models, or 2008 models, and some 2012 models, or iMacs.

This thread so far has had an excess of complaint and a dearth of fact.

Your insistence that everyone should get their Mac reballed is far too broad a brush to paint with. But then you are in that business aren't you?

No I am not in the reball business, I am in IT consultant who has Mac owners as my clients and it is my job to advise them to the best of my abilities. I refer my clients to an ebay reball service here in the UK period.

The only excess I can see have been 99% of your posts, so will you pretty please leave us users alone so we can sort our own Macbook Pro's out without your petty distractions.

Because you implied I ran a reball service????  Carry on, you just can't stop and help yourself, you are giving Executive relations more than enough evidence that all of us users are sick to death of reading your nonsense and you should simply stop posting on this thread.

Though I hope they confiscate all your points for a years worth of annoying the heck out of everyone on this thread, bar your friends who watch your back and condone your years worth of persistent disruptive behaviour as in T&C 5,2.

I'm seriously considering asking Santa for Christmas to see if he can make @CSound1 reply with a good and helpful answer in this discussion.

You posted with such conviction about reballing I made the assumption that you were in the business. Apologies.

You may try to justify the continuing use of lead if you want, it's your choice. It's not mine.

    I am not justifying anything.

Even rarely use lead solder as I mostly replace them with new lead free balled chips if needed.

Not saying I don't use lead solder, it just depends the job.

In some cases it is best to use lead, be it legal or not.

And btw, there can still be chips in a macbook or any other brand still using lead.

There are many execmptions like for airial, space, medical, servers and flip chip connections between die and carrier, wich are basically BGAs etc.

It was about lead free and Apple not beeing that environmental friendly at all.

You came with facts of lead in painting.

Think most prefer a lasting repair or a repair not destroying other parts due the higher temp needed using lead instead of lead free.

One popular theory in this thread is that it is the fault of Apple not using leaded solder that is at the heart of this matter. There even recomendations "not to accept" lead free repairs.

That is why lead is being mentioned in this thread, even justified

    Hello jaguar3000,

I'm living also in Switzerland near Lausanne. In this part, there is no. Since that the lawsuit is not finished, I don't think that we should make any modification by somebody else than Apple. They should be capable to say that they can't repair the computer because we did a modification on it.

I hope that Apple will react soon. Because looks like my computer will die sooner.... Use the GFX to only use the integrate chip.
