Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

take it as you want and go, leave this thread, go buy a 2011 mbp to add your collection and share your experience, or not.

    bye

Thank you very much for your recording, that helps me a great deal for my Genius bar appointment tomorrow.

Also: "It's just a Lemon of a computer" I laughed hard! So true!

There are some gold moments where you really have to stop and think. I thought 16:30 was good:

"Have you had a smooth experience on my Macbook?"

"[pause]...Umm, smooth enough. Like I said..."

"Smooth enough to lie to me?...."

    Lol

when I look at the environmental report for the late 2011 MBP 15, it does not indicate that the solder is lead free.  maybe you can point out where it states that it is?

What's even worse is that they are absolutely NOT environmentally friendly.

Random thought. Since my Macbook is useless until Apple decide to issue a product recall, I'm going to find every excuse under the sun to leave it with them.

Every other day I will call them up and complain about it. They can't get rid of it, because that would be stealing. They can't not talk to me, because they have my faulty laptop.

Because they refuse to admit any hardware faults, software fixes are free as said by Apple themselves, so this should cost nothing but time and patience.

Be careful! The parents of a friend of mine own a car dealership and apparently one of the cars they sold was indeed a real lemon. The buyer came to them multiple times with different issues and wouldn't pick it up one day, demanding a trade-in instead. My friends parents didn't want to do that, the matter went to court and in the end the buyer had to pay for occupying space at the dealership. Better talk to someone who knows your countrie's laws, or otherwise you may get charged for leaving your brick with Apple.

Thank you, I will take this in to consideration whilst pushing the envelope as far as I can.

I think MPB 2011 owners are in for a bit of a wait now, Apple is just full of scandals and mishaps at the moment:

I can feel your frustration so well.. The injustice here is huge. A monopolist being the almighty ruler who will decide everything for you.

"The customer is king" does NOT exist at all here.

From the beginning I've dealt with the company, I've loved their computers (the ones that don't fail), seriously disliked the rigidness of their small mobile devices and seriously NOT loved the company for their "Service".. In their case  "Service" seems to go as far your pocket goes deep...

I have two 2011 macbook pro's. One has had two motherboard replacements and the second one is in need of one.

The first repair I paid for out of my pocket, and I bought a second used 2011 MBP for backup. One year later the first one died again and the second one crashes every 10 minutes with GPU issues (sudden shut down). Called Apple Canada to ask about repair or discount towards a new machine but got no response. In the meantime I bought a new MBP to continue to be able to work, with applecare, and called Apple again. This time they offered to repair the laptop for free and when I got it back the genius said if you paid for a motherboard Apple will replace for free any further failures. This is the only record or case of this policy to be confirmed.

This week I visited my brother only to find that his 2011 macbook pro has also had a GPU failure and an out of pocket motherboard repair.

That's 3 of 3 with a manufacturing defect causing GPU failure that can only be repaired with a motherboard replacement.

    Hello,

Just writing to add my experience to the thread. I have a late 2011 MacBook pro model that has been experiencing issues related to the discrete graphics chip.

I have never used it for any particularly graphics intensive tasks, just watching movies or tv shows. Sometimes I would connect it to an external display. Two months ago it started exhibiting the same issues described here, with the screen locking up, displaying banded lines of color or a split screen whenever I tried to perform any graphics intensive tasks - I couldn't even use an online classroom without it immediately crashing.

After downloading GFXCardStatus and switching to integrated graphics as soon as the computer boots up, I'm able to hobble along, but this is not an actual fix, just a work-around. Today I wrote a nice letter to Tim Cook asking to be referred to exec. customer relations, and for a credit towards replacing the logic board since my device is out of warranty. I also scheduled a call with Apple Support for tomorrow morning. I understand this is not a guaranteed fix, but its a place to start.

I just can't justify spending $600+ to fix something that was an initial manufacturing defect. I'm not trying to stir the pot, just asking for fair treatment. Here's hoping for a positive experience with customer relations

    Seriously?

Allready wrote why a few pages back.

Compared to other brands that are easier and/or cheaper to repair, upgradable, recyclable etc....
