Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I was asked to fill out a quick survey about this site just now. Probably since it's my first post on my new MBP (which I was forced to buy because mine is dead)

At the end this screen pops up…

I call BS on that last line ^

I think she is an idiot, and I think that people who post non functional links in an attempt to bolster their points are also idiots, lazy idiots.

But you are welcome to use her as a reference, I am sure it helps.

There, I think I made that clear, back to Ms Silverstone.

Just came back from the Berlin Apple Store. Showed them my MBP and the Genius didn't even have to wait for the blue screen to tell me "It's the graphics card problem, right?" I confirmed that and expecting the usual excuses, I came up with evidence that this wasn't an isolated incident (this forum, the petition, the law suit, numerous reputable websites talking about it, inquiry by the Spanish consumer assoc.... you name it). Surprisingly, he told me that he was very well aware of the problem and that each day there were five people coming in with the same issue. Having worked in retail for some time I know that such numbers are ususally understated/ divided by three so I suspect that the actual number is much higher.

Anyhow, as always with Apple whenever I approached them, they couldn't offer me any help. He said they could exchange the logic board, to which I replied that this is not a viable/ longterm solution to the problem. The Genius was also aware of that and told me to download that gdfx thingie (or whatever it's called) and install it on my Mac. Two problems: Firstly there is currently no OS installed on my computer as I did a factory reset and I can't install an OS because the POS keeps crashing. Secondly: That's like putting spare tires on a high performance vehicle. Only difference of course, that my MBP was never high performance to begin with.

I told him that I would now go to a reballer and have the whole thing redone. The Genius claimed that this wasn't a longterm solution either, but I think he was under the impression the reballer would just do the oven trick. Anyhow, the reballer charges me €109 for his service, including a new(er) graphics chip and gives me a one year guarantee. Apple charges €600 for a refurbished logicboard and merely gives me a 90 days guarantee on their work. It doesn't take a Genius (pun intended) to see whose offer I should accept.

In the end I told the Genius that this is in no way against him but that I am incredibly disappointed with Apple and that my experience with their service has been consistently bad. In case they start an exchange program, which according to him seems more likely than a wide spread replacement of the logicboard (because they will be considered vintage soon), I will take the new MBP, sell it and buy a Lenovo and lots of booze and cigars for the difference.

Note that the use of a 3rd party repair shop and 3rd party components may make your Mac ineligible for any replacement program that may start in the future. That would be in line with previous recalls.

    Hi RenardFJ

unfortunately, we heard it all before, story doesn't change much on their part and won't unless they receive orders to do so.

sometimes you're somewhat lucky to hear them acknowledging the fact there is a lot of customers bringing their computer for the same failure but whether they do or don't, a refurbished logic swap is all they are allowed to offer.

they probably don't know much about a reballing process, not part of their job so can't really blame them for that either.

good luck with the reball, that should fix it for a while.

Noted. No 3rd party components are used, to my knowledge. At least none other than the AMD Radeon HD 9770M that was put in there to begin with. Should the recall come some day, I will flat out deny that I've ever had some 3rd party repair shop do work on it.

Ok, so there is only one, I genuinely hope that the 3rd party repair does not disallow it under any settlement, if one is reached.

Incidently, I also talked to the guy about my iPhone 5 with the broken on/ off switch. There is a recall program for that and in principle my phone is eligible. Last time my button wasn't broken enough () this time my button is sufficiently broken, but there is a "dent" on the side of the bezel that may make reassembly impossible. That dent is more of a scratch where the paint came off (you can't feel any bump whatsoever), still he disadvised me from sending it in. Honestly, should that MBP recall come around some day I fear that it will become a comparable ordeal, requiring me to go to the Apple store three or four times before they will accept my computer.
