Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

You should read the link yourself (obviously you didn't)

Test your links for relevance, and existence.

Seriously, for a simple mistake you keep going on like this?

That link was by accident, probably still in my c/p buffer and didn't notice.

And as you can edit posts only for a limited time... saw it to late.

And yes, I did read it.

As you seem so eager to read it too, digged it up again especially for you!!!

    randomly is was I meant.

not by how you pick people you call stupid but rather based on criteria making you think they would indeed be, stupid.

in the end, that makes you just that.

    stupid.

I am always amazed by the depth of the things you claim to know, but I will note that it's not your money that might be lost if you are wrong. Easy to spend someone elses money.

Posters should ignore your claims and check for themselves, unless you are going to repay them.

Just had Apple on the phone. The lady acknowledged the problem and also said that Apples engineering division is well aware of the issue and that they're looking into it - which probably means they're trying to find a solution. In any case, as long as the repair is done by a certified shop Apple will cover it in case there's a recall program.

It's interesting how this issue became so big, that they can't deny it anymore.

Yes it is, and that's a reassuring statement. In writing would be better I guess but ..

    Small steps.

don't mean to beat down your hope, RenardFJ, but I been told the same thing over the phone by an Ireland rep back in february.

aware of it and looking into it, welcomed to pay for a refurbished logic board replacement in the meantime.

repair done by an Apple certified shop, meaning anything else than the one and only logic board swap?

reball is a much more efficient and cheaper way to go, might void your legibility in case of a hypothetical recall but since it might never happen, you can at least have a working computer back.

    but choice is yours, obviously.

    good luck.

I'm amazed that the lack of knowledge you even claim to know.  having gone through the entire Nvidia issues 4-6 years ago and to get a reply like that just shows how lacking in experience you truly are.  Staggering - your points should be in a minus category for your quality of comments, your advice is not only daft but seriously wrong debating with professionals on this thread when you don't have a clue and newcomers may actually think your points add up to intellect about this issue.

all I can see is despite me stating that executive relations have been in touch about your trolling wrecking this topic, this thread is STILL polluted by up to 50% of your persisitent disruptive nonsense.

One minute to reply to that message - you must have this page on auto refresh like all the other easy questions to harvest.

there is nothing worse than a consultant giving out bad advice, I get them all the time with so called techs ruining Windows and Mac systems so it's nothing new to me.  Barring the SOGA that's all you have given on this entire thread.

Telling people that they will not be excluded from any potential settlement simply because 'you know' is bad advice.

The truth is that you don't know what the terms of any possible settlement will be, you don't know if there will even be one, no matter how much you yell.

    To other readers:

The advice is the same, if, and in the case of a future settlement it is entirely possible that the terms agreed may exclude machines that have been repaired by 3rd parties, the lawyers will decide this.
