Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I pulled all files over from my Macbook to an external hard drive and then erased the HD and the OS along with it (that's what I meant by factory reset),

Then if Windows was there it's not now, forget about it.

then erased the HD and the OS along with it (that's what I meant by factory reset)

Could it be that you only erased one volume/partition (e.g. "Macintosh HD"), instead of the whole disk?  Bootcamp-Windows would have been its own volume.

    That's probably it

Must admit installing bootcamp is something I've never done drunk with the lads! And unlike the later models with the ssd blades the install does take a while on a standard hard drive and unless you patch the MBR on a MBP 2011 via a OS X boot usb SSD's does not support trim in windows  via ahci so instead of SATA 3 they run ata-133 which is pretty useless in terms of performance and not good for the long term health of the ssd.  Modded to ahci they run like a champ in SATA 3 and are very quick. My 840 evo boots 7x64 in about 20 seconds.

BCA creates the hybrid MBR partition to install Windows formatted as fat32, during windows setup you format that bootcamp volume as NTFS to install windows on it,  then if you have created the windows driver support USB stick post windows setup it auto installs the driver support, renames the volume as bootcamp and after booting OS X its visible in finder.

if you didn't go to boot camp assistant afterwards and remove Windows the bootcamp volume should have still been visible in finder - unless perhaps you installed windows and didn't install the boot camp support software afterwards because having fun being drunk you got bored and forgot about it

I'd say that I know a good 85% of those words, but putting them together really doesn't help me make sense of what you wrote. Lifelong and content Windows user, I only switched to Mac because I was told it was even easier to operate and more reliable. My experience didn't live up to either thing. So yeah, no way in **** I'd be able to install Windows on my Mac drunk, let alone sober.

    Hi guys!

It is clear that apple once more failed to create quality computers plus they are ignoring and refusing this issue that thousand of 2011 macbook pro owners suffers, makes me mad. I am having the very same problem with the discrete graphics card on my MBP early 2011. After spending some time on forums and other discussion platforms managed to  find a way that may enable you to use your computer again, but it isn't a definite solution. I did these steps and am able use my computer now. I'd like to share this with fellows who suffers from the same problem and desparate to use their computer.

    1) Turn on your MBP and before you get low quality apple logo press option+command+P+R.(Sometimes it is useful to press command+v after hearing second boot sound.)

    2) It will try to boot but since your Gpu is giving error it won't be successful. Don't worry while it is trying to boot close the lid of your computer and make sure your power adapter is plugged.

    3) Wait until your computer get hot while try to boot and finally temp sensor turns off your computer. When this happens don't wait your computer to cool down and  immediately turn it on. Now you have chance to boot  your mac with integrated graphics card.

    4) If you were able to boot your computer successfully by following these steps and finally you have access to your computer go and install gfxCradStatus from web and launch it. Choose integrated only option and make sure get notification that saying you are now using HD3000. It worked for me. As i said it is not definite solution for GPU failure error but better than nothing right?

PS: After a while you may get same you error agin. Just repeat these steps agin and make sure you choose integrated graphics HD3000 every time you reboot. Good luck!

Well my replaced logic board ( done at Aberdeen store) has died, and i am back through the whole process and booked into Aberdeen next week.

I am exceptionally perturbed and annoyed at Apple over this, and there inability to accept there are issues with these machines. Whilst my Customer Care representative has been nice i get the feeling they really don't want to accept that there are issues.

If board number two replaced fails which i expect then i am potentially going to get my solicitor on the case as this is really unacceptable. I have a ton of machines, from early Macbook Air, to macbook pro ( 2 of the current generation) and a 12 core Mac Pro. All of which, especially the earlier have worked without fail......

Starting to get p**sed off with Apple over this.

I did the reballing in March and have gone 9 months and it's working very well. After reballing I use Fan Control for security to make the Mac cool with rpm base at 3000.

It's not important whether or not it was there (or whether you installed it drunk )

If it was there one of two conditions will exist when it comes back. (a) it will still be there (b) it will be gone.

Neither is an issue, time to put Windows to bed now.

Just got off the phone with german executive support Christine Helbing, she tells me Apple engineering is on it and may or may not set up a repair programme, whereas in the former case, repairs paid for out of ones own pocket would be refunded.

Other than that, my lead solder reballed MBP is working as desired. 125 EUR vs. 700 EUR (possibly multiples of that), do the math yourself.

Thanks, but I would much prefer to see something in writing from Apple.
