Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I love a bit of creative editing

But this is what you actually said:

    Csound.

There are 30,000 people who have signed a petition about this issue.

Your single voice questioning 30,000 cases is a waste of bandwidth on this page.

As you clearly wish to bend the facts to suit yourself I have no more time to play your games.

    Bye.

admit it, it don't change a thing now that understand he got same problem as us, the not including you "us".

Ok, so you are accusing me of lying by suggesting there is a 30,000 strong petition?

Or are you accusing me of lying by saying that you are not here trying deny legit complaints?

In any event, it looks like most people will be happy if you leave.

Then we can get back on topic and stop wasting bandwidth.

I'll keep it simple for you,

When you said that I questioned the numbers on the petition:

Your single voice questioning 30,000 cases

You were not in accordance with the facts.

If you think that you are then I afford you (again) the opportunity to quote what it was that I said that 'questioned' the numbers.

Forget the Straw Man, support your original claim, that I "questioned the numbers"

Or don't, either way we will know.

This bickering is not helping anyone to solve the problem and is just cluttering up this thread with noise.

Will everyone please just keep this thread to technical solutions?

Ok, use your apple insider information (which I assume you must have if you 'know' that I am wrong) to give us the accurate number of cases of GPU failure with early 2011 macbook pro's.

We have 30,000 names on a petition, tell us how many 'cases' that represents and prove that I lied (and in order to prove that I 'lied' you need to show that I really know the actual number and intentionally misrepresented them). Your accusation of lying, stated page 708 of this epic thread, is clear.

An honest debater, someone who isn't trolling a thread, would just say I was wrong. Accusing someone of lying is the tactic of a troll, someone who is here to disrupt a legit thread of complaints and deflect criticism. I am here as an apple customer since OS 7, a high end pro user who has seen his work disrupted by a manufacturing defect that apple has yet to fully address and who has had three GPU failures on both of my 2 2011 MBP's.

I gave you 3 chances to support what you claim, and you can't.

Your house is glass. Your statement is false.

now without any doubt we know who thinks this thread is all about him..

him understanding, him to be proven something, whatever.

and we all get email notifications to be sure we get alerted whenever that happens.

while our computers are still failing, while Apple is still not doing anything about it and while we still welcome new affected customers everyday.

    that's great.

    As a reminder.

One of my 2 2011 MPB's with GPU failure did get a free replacement (still working and under the unigine valley benchmark GPU test for the last 48 hours) from Apple Canada, where a genius told me that anyone who had paid out of pocket for a GPU/motherboard replacement will have further replacements paid for by Apple. This is still an unconfirmed policy.

    To the moderator.

By all means edit my posts to stay on topic.

But please do us the courtesy of also editing all csound1 posts that are also off topic.

That's nice to hear, but better if it becomes a confirmed policy, especially for the people who already paid up.

I called Apple Care her in Holland and they did not know of any policy for this problem. So I can't confirm it here. Hopeful though!

Are there any other reports of people getting this repair payed by Apple?

I'm still pondering of what to do. Spending close to 800 euro's on a macbook that is worth 1000 or so when in working order does not feel like a win...

Guys I am having the same issue with my macbook pro 15" i7 2,2ghz.

I purchased this from apple refurbished just over a year ago.

I think apple should recall this crap of the market, I paid $1500 the laptop did not last 2 years.

Can anyone from apple talk about this?

If they don't act quick i am going to consumer affair with this.  I need answers.

some managed to get their "repair" by Apple free of charge but they are such a minority.

keep in mind that an Apple "repair" won't deal with the problem, it will resurface at some point since all logic board are built the same (bad) way.

only if you try and get a computer replacement after a 4th logic board switch, you should try and find a technician who can either reflow or reball your chips.

that is way cheaper and more efficient to get a working computer back.

plenty people here can help you finding one if you choose this option.

Apple has an answer for you, your computer is old, you should buy a new one.

They can even help you with a 100€ off coupon with it.

    sorry to welcome you, btw.
