Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yes even though they openly advertise them thusly .....

[W]e design everything from our largest displays to our smallest cables to be durable and long lasting. And to make sure they
are, we test them in our Reliability Testing Lab at
    our headquarters in Cupertino.

    .....

Our built in notebook batteries last up to five years. Which saves on buying new batteries, produces less waste, and increases the lifespan of your notebook.

And when Apple product owners pass along their devices to friends or family, they’re conserving resources, too.   Sometimes the mark of a great product isn’t how many you sell, but how much it’s used.

NOT A SINGLE CENT / PENNY / EURO TO APPLE ANYMORE !!!!

According to Portuguese consumer law's every replaced item of my computer (logic board and hard disk) has an additional renewed warranty of 2 years.

Because my MacBook components have been failing before the 2year warranty expires I am getting renewed logic boards (3 so far, waiting for the 4th) for free.

Still, Apple cannot perpetuate the default, they should provide a definite solution, a fix or they enter in default.

When someone buys an item it should work as stated/ publicized by the vendor, if the item is faulty the vendor has 3 options (after the client complains, before the warranty voids): 1)  fix it for FREE or 2) return the money to the client or 3) give a new fully-working item. Usually companies fix the item, as it is the cheapest mandatory option. It is important that the client proves (or an expert technician proves) that the item was faulty, not due to normal wear and tear reasons or the client's misuse, but due to bad, faulty vendor's production/design...

Please: read your own country's consumer law's so you can protest.
Yesterday I sent an email to Tim Cook (Apple CEO) & to my surprise I got a reply asking for my contact details so they can check my case!

    Best wishes for everyone

Sadly no, I have rules set to delete all non relevant notifications at the server. I never see them unless I set out to. Which I rarely do.

But I can see the amusement value, carry on.

oh ok, I should have used an emoticon or something, cause I was being cynical, obviously you thought I was serious.

I just relayed what I and others been officially told by Apple.

I really don't want to change my computer for these ssd + ram soldered specs they sell now, don't care much having a retina screen to carry everywhere I go either.

sadly you won't get much from Apple but you need to get a case number so you're problem is registered so talk to them about your issue.

but think about having it reballed by a specialist if you really need it to be working asap while not spending too much money, time or energy.

    good luck
