Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hello,

I am having the same problem, told by thousands of people now on this forum. I have a macbook pro 15", bought in february 2011, always worked perfectly. Now since 1 month I have blue screens and grey screens that make my computer crash. Also I sometimes had strange lines over my screen.

Since yesterday, I can only start the computer in safe mode, and then my screen gets black stripes and lines all over it.

I read on this forum that many have the same problem. Is there already any reaction of Apple yet?

A simple replacement should be helping thousands of people...

If anyone can help me, thanks a lot.

    Hi kayazuki,

yes I had already contact with D3us, but he said the normal fixes done by apple presellers (change of logic board) are usually a fix for 1 to 3 months, or maybe 1 day when you use heavy programs. I am an architect so using autocad and graphic programs all the time... so probably the fix isn't worth the price of 600 to 1000 euros...

I will ask D3us if he can fix my computer... it's hard that such a good laptop fails because of this issue.. I had the macbook 4 years without any problem ...

    Hi from germany,

I' m next with this problem with my 15" Core i7 2.2 Ghz MBP from Late 2011. I'll try it with replacing the GPU if possible, but my "service center" said it also could be a problem with the logic board in combination with the GPU. On 5th of january they will try to fix the problem and I hope it's not the logic board... another way could be to sell the defective mbp on ebay, the prices are still high with around 400 Euro...

If that "service center" is an Apple one, they will NOT replace the gpu if it is gpu related.

They will only replace the logic board with another one.

Reading the forum, those often fail due the same problem later.

If that happens again out of the 3 months warranty...

    Hi,

no it's a "normal" notebook repair shop... Replacing the logic board is no option, otherwise I'll buy a new device... perhaps my last Mac

Hi Joke, I know what you're talking about completely, I'm am in a similar field, using AutoCAD + Photoshop/Illustrator all the time.

You may trust with 99,9% certainty that when you visit D3us, your Mac will run perfect 1 or 2 hours after you arrived there. There is always a theoretical chance that something completely different is broken, but if you have a 2011 MBP, that chance is practically zero.

I've just setup a place on the server of my company where we can all come together and talk freely, with structured information about the issue and solutions. When it's ready, i'll inform you all.

    Hi MoritzSN,

I have no clue which repair shop you mean, all I know is that there are MANY different approaches and ideas about how this can be fixed.

Another thing I know is, that the method of D3us is very definitely the best possible approach that exists with these factors.

If you have ANY possibility to visit the area of Antwerp (Belgium) or simply to send your logic board (or whole Mac if you can't remove the board yourself) by some transport service like DPD or UPS, please do yourself a huge favor and consider that... It's done fast and as perfect as it gets (and as economic as it gets because he really wants to help all of us!)..

Or just search for a guy called Danny Gruenberger, Berlin based. 125€ and you're good.

Seconded! Gave my MBP to Mr Grünberger and had it back within one week. It's running pretty smoothly so far, no glitches etc. Also one year warranty!

    Hey guys,

so just let me see if I got this right: the issue is known, can be fixed, plenty of people have it, and apple has not and most likely will not adress any of it?

@kayazuki I live in Munich, do you or D3us happen to have any associates in the area that could fix my MBP?

As for the apple staff overseeing this thread and not reacting to it: bravo! You're helping a lot of peoples brand decision for their next notebook purchase a lot easier.

Yes! Forgive my memory. I've read about him before too and he seems to have a high success rate too.

So so far, there are 2 experts known in West Europe with confirmed reputation that have a fix for this.

I don't know if Mr Gruenberger (in Berlin) operates as a private person or a registered business to provide invoices for business customers though (do you know 14minus9/RenardFJ?). Who has some contact details of Mr Gruenberger? So I can contact him about some technical details and so I could add him to that new place of information.

    1) Not many ppl seem to be helped yet, but yes, for the rest; that just about sums it up...

    2) See the post above you, there is someone in Berlin that has successfully fixed boards. You can find his details on page 676.

I hope to learn what his method is, because so far I have only personally witnessed the method of D3us (eml: 2sjevoo_gmx_net, replace the _ with the regular symbols) and I fully realise the reason how this all happened (see my detailed post on page 701) and why his method is simply a 100% sure fix IF the problem limits itself only to a failed connection under the GPU (which is the case in nearly all cases).

Are you too lazy to do a google search? He operates a registered business and provides invoices. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=danny+gruenberger
