Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I'll try it with a service in Wuppertal... I think every good repair shop with professional reworker equitment is capable of removing the logic board (I did it myself for cleaning up the fans ) and solder a new gpu...

and in the future: Apple will start a global recall and when we ship in our MBPs they'll say it isn't their fault because we did open the case und remove the logic boards and that's then no warrenty case of the recall ^^

if he was lazy, since his computer is now fixed, I think he wouldn't even spend energy posting his experience, responding people's questions or trying to set up an alternative forum to gather maximum information on this matter where anybody that is affected could find help and express themselves without any censorship.

Thanks for the kind reply. I did Google his data before, and in a reply on page 676 to your msg I even asked you for confirmation, but didn't see a confirmation lateron. On that same page 676 MGSH asked you something similar.

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro and it has just started to present the symptoms related to the AMD graphic card. Is Apple looking at this thread ? Now I'm stuck with a 2000+ $ paper weight. This is so **** frustrating ... My previous Macbook Pro had a similar issue with the NVIDIA graphics chip. I can't believe this is happening to my current machine AGAIN !!!!

Sad welcome to the club..

If you get a reflow done by an expert, your problem will be gone, but you'll have to fund it yourself. Good thing is that it's a LOT cheaper then a (useless) board replacement via the standard channel.. Check my long post on page 701 for some details..

I've considered that but I really think Apple should propose a proper fix. In the mean time, they could at least offer a software solution to disable the discrete circuits permanently. Current solutions involving gfxcardstatus or disabling the AMD kexts don't work.

I think we all agree that Apple should fix this. But that wish exists for approx 2yrs already.. Leaving us without the service we deserve as customers, which leaves our machines useless for our work, etc. My late 2011 acted up weird for a few weeks and then it completely died on me. Software doesn't fix this in a satisfying way by far. Reflow it and you have a good machine, or wait for an unknown amount of time (or forever) and have a paperweight.. :-( That kind of sums up your options.. Sorry.. What's your location?

Kernel dumps. Oh boy.. This thread is already so horrifyingly long, maybe you could edit your post and leave that out pls? Nicer for other visitors that try to find a solution. You could mail the dump to Apple though. Although they can also not do much with it as it's a hardware problem, which can't be fixed by any software..

When my machine died and I had this solution suggested I thought this: My Mac was out of warranty, Apple keeps its hand very far off of this, offering no solution except replacing the boards for a significant price with other boards that consequently show the same error, this machine definitely earned the €125 that I could pay to have this dead machine fixed into a fast and great machine again. No thanks to the producer, but thanks to D3us.

It was worth it and my opinion about Apple has changed forever.

If you know someone there to fix it with a reflow, i strongly suggest you try that, because then you have a good machine back. If you don't have anyone that you know of, just send me an email (hover  my user ID), I'll help you as much as I can..

I experienced same failure as you almost a year ago, I was told by Apple over the phone at that time that they were aware of this issue and looking into it while at the Apple store in Paris, France, seemed like many people came before me for the same problem so I hoped they would finally make a recall or something.

never happened, and now entering 2015, I doubt they ever will.

I, too, opted for a reflow to finish the unfinished job on the soldering they should have done 3 years ago, with some cleaning my computer is running perfectly and much cooler than before.

D3us did a great job but if Belgium is too far, seems you got a solution in Germany you could check.

Paying Apple for the logic board switch is useless, unless you want them to change your computer for a 2014 model after the 4th 'repair' failed which is not even guaranteed without a bit of a fight.

If you're willing to have a computer with everything soldered in it and not even much better than yours, that is.

Omg, this really will never going to turn into something good, will it?

Learning that they are soldering even the RAM memory on the boards now really made me decide I'll never buy a new Mac. That kind of rigidness of forcing such irrationally high costs for standard Samsung memory banks is really to much I think.

The 2011 and 2012 models are simply great (apart form this soldering issue), you can chuck 16Gb or RAM in them, and when you then add a nice big SSD drive, these machines are so fast, unbelievable! I cannot see why I would ever have to replace this thing again, seriously.

I'm still using the old AutoCAD 2005 via Parallels in old WinXP (cut off from internet) because it does what I need and Acad starts up from "cold" in 3 seconds?! Photoshop: 4 seconds.

The first computer I ever used was an ATARI. Since then I've seen a loooooooot of "Faster, but still slow in the end". But this is, by all means, just nasty FAST .

I agree, 2012 are even better because some upgrades they have (USB, bluetooth..) but they are both the last great laptops they produced, imo.

those new specs, I don't even want to own any of these, they should just rent them and let customers change every year for a new one, why buy one if you can't even upgrade the storage or the ram?

and what about those two having issues, you need to take it in and wait a few days for them to change it?

seeing how they deal with this gpu issue, wouldn't want to risk experiencing any ssd or ram problem with any of their new models.
