Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Macbook pro 17 early 2011 here.

I'm in the same boat as you guys. Started on Lion, with small artifacts, and it continues to happen on Mountain Lion as well. No severe gpu issues though, but the machine cost me around 2,5k back in the day, and this is just frustrating to see this happening now. The best move for Apple would be offering a free of charge replace of the logic boards with 6750m and other problematic gpus, as this seems to be a massive glitch.

I hope this thread won't go unnoticed.

Heres the ATI info on my unit after getting the logic board replaced, wanted to see if it was still the same version as everyone else experiecing this issue.

Exactly the same as my faulty one. Bought in early 2011, never repaired.

I'm in desperate need for tips for booting.

First there were artifacts, then heavy glitches, then the split screen. I started using gfxcardstatus and the crashes stopped. Then I accidentally rebooted, and it was a big pain, but I eventually got to OS X.

Now I'm getting nothing but the blue screen during boot, and can't seem to avoid it. I can boot single user, though.

    I've tried:

    - resetting PRAM

    - resetting SMC

    - I've tried several arrangements of ATI* and AMD* kexts, including removing all of them.

    - I've checked file system with fsck

    - I've repaired system permissions with chown

    What else can I try?

Why won't Apple recall this p.o.s.?

    Hi,

I started a new thread here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5545999

This is not a discussion, it is rather a guide:

"What to do when I have some Graphics Issues on my MacBookPro 2011"

Please don't answer or comment there, rather use this thread here.

I hopes it helps and answer some of your questions.

By the way, I have already filed this issue to Apple with links to the corresponding threads, photos, Log file and hopefully helpful technical tips.

Stay tuned, I'm sure Apple will solve the problem, but don't expect them to come up with the solution in the next few days.

It takes time in such a huge company, but you can be sure, they care about loyal customers!

    Enjoy your 

I've got an appointment at the genius bar in Paris (opéra) next week so they can make a diagnostic for free and officialy add my computer to the list of non-working 2011 MacBookPros.

I urge everyone to do the same, even if you refuse to pay for the repair and go back home with your nice newly made unibody-coaster. They may not look at this thread numbers, but they'll have to admit there is numerous cases in their store logs.

I'm gathering some IT-journalists emails to send french press a good review of what is going on here so then can help us be heard.

Its not the same problem, If you have same issue, you can't plug your external monitor to MBP.

I believe it's been mentioned in this thread before... most people suffer from the dedicated gpu fauillure, but sometimes it seems as if the integrated is defect for some people.

In my case; as soon as I use the dedicated gpu (like when using an external monitor, or by manually swithcing to dedicated), the system will freeze/crash within minutes.

I definitely have "the problem" -- but currently the most stable state I have had my 2011 MBP since August is to plug it into my 27" monitor, with the lid closed, turn off GPU switching, and boost the left fan to 4000rpm. I now only "crash" once per week instead of once per hour with other combinations. The point is, this is yet another variation of what others are experiencing. I believe that the internal GPU ram has been fried due to prolonged heat and that depending upon which memory component is fried you get a slightly different behavior. This is why it is so frustrating for everyone to try to nail this: it is almost impossible to replicate unambiguously.

However, it "appears" that forcing use of the internal graphics is the most stable with the caveat that things get a bit strange when rebooting (especially when recovering from a crash).

Please check your system.log, if you find:

    GPU Hang State = 0x00000000

    AMDTurksGraphicsAccelerator: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **

** GPU ASIC Log Start **

then it is the same problem.

Can I please ask you guys to state quite clearly that the problems are beyond the 6750 model?

I have a Radeon 6770m with the exact same problems, and so do many users.

I'm afraid of the possibility that Apple might start a repair/recall program that only accepts early 2011 MBPs, when it's quite clear that late 2011 MBPs also present the problem....

@jebedias  - this affects ALL 2011 models. I had the issues with my 6770m on my late '11 also. Got a few logic board about 2 weeks ago and it's been fine since then.
