Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hi Joey,

Are you logged in, or visiting as a guest?

If you're logged in, you can find the contact details of D3us by hovering his account name.

I know how busy he got because of fixing these issues, he also fixed my GPU 3,5 weeks ago (Mac works better then ever now btw) so I offered to help him explain things to ppl etc, as I like to contribute here for the common good.

Meaning, if you hover my name, you can also contact me and I'll help you on your way.

second computer failing for same problem, you have two good reasons to be upset.

what happened to the previous one then?

Yes, the previous one had the same problem. This thread i think was the one used a the time.

There is no guarantee that any of the 3rd party repairs will last.

And there is also no guarantee that if you choose that route and Apple offer a solution for this issue that your Mac will still be eligible after non-approved service attempts.

Just a note here (for new readers)

There is no guarantee that the Apple repair will work at all.

No more than any other, that also is true.

Hello everyone I've been calling to the apple support services fromr France and Usa for 3 weeks at least. I don't have an answer yet but I pushing them. They already know that there are lot of people with this problem.

I'm inviting everyone in this group to do the same. Call everyday if is possible for you and tell them that you have a construction problem and you need a free reparation of your macbook if we all do this they will feel the pressure and they will do something.

I'm sorry for my English. I hope you will understand my message.

Congratulations on your efforts for notifying Apple directly, thus making them aware and responsible to fix their problems!
I Have been doing the same: contacted Apple, they have collected information from my computer via remote connection to search for issues.
The technician who was sharing my screen saw my mac book going crazy with pixelated windows in front of his face!!!
I am expecting a reply with a solution from them.
Best wishes & a Merry Christmas for everyone

The problem is not that Apple hardware goes bad: the problem is that Apple doesn't accept responsibility, and flips the bird to its customers...

I Had a MacBook pro late 2011 before, no problems, but I know what's causing your problem and apple will not provide a good repair, they will change the logic board for money and then it will break again, the problem is that the AMD Radeon discrete graphics card runs hot and damages other part of the logic board including itself, I strongly recommend that you get a new MacBook that has only Intel graphics or Ingel and NVIDIA graphics, don't get ones with AMD, they are unreliable.

    Hi BlazenMike24,

This doesn't seem necessarily true, see the longest post on page 701 on this forum.. Fixing the bad soldering makes basically practically all those GPU's run just fine, cooler and can fix the MBP's completely for a long time (based on a year of statistics of someone on this forum who fixes them for that period of time already)...

I Agree with you partly, but after re soldering, they break down again, they last for maybe a few months at most, but a lot of people in this forum and other forums have done it and they lasted one month, it fixes the issue temporarily, but not permanently, if those macbook's just had Intel graphics, no AMD, or Intel and NVIDIA like the newer ones, none of the re soldering would even need to take place

get your facts straight, or did you even bother reading ANY of the previous pages?

this is not a problem of the chip, but of the soldering. correct soldering fixes this issue.

stop posting redundant and incorrect information!

I Have read a lot of posts from this site and other sites, that's what made me want to post this, what I'm saying is that, the AMD Graphics card runs hot, that cause the thermal paste on the inside to melt and crumble, making it affect itself and other parts around it, then when you resolder it, it fixes it temporarily, then it will break down, and what I'm saying is from what I have read from a lot of post, what im saying is that the AMD radeon runs hot and that's whats causing the need to re solder. I have had a MacBook like this before that runs hot on AMD and on Intel, my uncle is a professional with MacBook's and has fixed these issues before, my facts are correct, if you disagree just keep replying.

About the re soldering, just forget about it, take the AMD out and put a better chip in, that will fix your problem completely and your MacBook will last for years, people have done that.

It's just that you cant put another chip in there, Mr. Oh-my-uncle-is-a-professional. My Uncle is Vladimir Putins dentist and tells me your uncle obviously is incorrect.

The chips run hot BECAUSE of the faulty application of thermal paste, not the other way around.

So what people have put what chip on a board that was exclusively designed for the HD6770M? Very curious to hear.

Whoa, Whoa, what are you so angry about, all I'm saying is what I know and what I think the solution would be, I'm not insulting anybody, or doing anything, im just saying what I think is right and what I think the problems, although if you read other post in this site and others, you would see to what i am referring to, but what are you mad about?
