Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I know some people dont want to do this, though I really recommend it, if you are experiencing the problems in these post, I reommend that if you want a reliable laptop, get the retinas from 2012-2014, they are really reliable, I have had mine for quite awhile, doesn't run hot or freeze, the retinas all run intel, or Intel and nvidia, so there won't be any re soldering and reflows needed, the reason I'm putting this out is because apple learned from its 2011 mistakes and made a lot of good changes on the newer ones, this is just my recommendation that you guys with the problems should be the newer ones.

If you want to assess the quality of 2012 retinas, come back after their Applecare expires. So far, Apple has told people not to worry about MBPs running hot, as 'it's perfectly normal', and these machines ran problem-free, until they started to have problems. Also, the problem is not so much about faulty hardware: the problem is with a manufacturer that does not care about its customers.

"...I didn't say it was a fact, I said that in MY OPINION..."

If this thread consisted only of facts, it would be three pages long.

funny how posts are now deleted without notifications.

would not be surprised if this all thread simply disappears at some point.

I am adding myself to this list. My late 2011 Macbook Pro 15" with a 6770 just crapped out. It was getting lines across the screen requiring a restart, and now it won't restart at all. It just has a lined green/gray screen with the Apple logo and a loading bar that goes in perpetual repeat restarting over and over.

I have used Apple laptops for quite some time, but unless there is a recall issued soon I don't know if I feel confident about purchasing another $2000 laptop from them only to have the graphics card crap out on me 3 years after buying it.

I'm very sad about this. I really liked the laptop, and, as a medical student, I don't really have the time or money to deal with this right now.

    Dear All:

I had posted in this discussion any ways of coming out of the kernel panic error after the graphics failure has been detected.

If anyone can suggest some thing so that I can start the mac back to 'without the graphics driver' mode I can recover some important data.

Are there any reballing repairs done in Detroit?

    Thanks

Apple are the ones that delete the post, they don't want the problem to be heard, that's why they are deleting post, stupid right?

D3us, I think apple deleted your other reply to me, the one about you know apple and the three extra years and hard earned money, yeah they deleted that post. Sorry, I should have waited a little longer before putting that opinion out. i didnt say it really clear earlier, but. Apple will replace your 2011 MacBook pro if you just tell them that every time it has been fixed, it has never worked. But if you like the 2011 versions more than the 2014s, I recommend to let D3us resolder it,
