Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    This tells us that they do have a quality program, and that this is now a known issue to apple.

    Wait for the final result before stating that.

    Curious for the outcome.

    I was going to say the same. I have yet to see an Apple Quality Program for the MacBook Pro GPU. Looked everywhere didn't find any. So far you have to pay $310 + tax.

    Hello,

    Just wanted to share my possible graphics card freak out experience today...

    I have MBPro 2011 running on mavericks...seems a lot of them are faulty but;

    I had a total freeze during my first time machine back up, had to manually shut down and on restart-

    I had a pink screen with pink apple on start up, followed by a flash of rainbow and then pale blue screen.

    If I tried any fancy start up buttons the screen would eventually turn dark blue with pin stripes.

    I tried every other fancy restart that might help, loads of times.

    Eventually I did this;

    I plugged the external hard drive back in then;

    Left shift key+control+alt+ power button for a long second (guy on phone from apple said to try this)

    (it shouldn't try to restart during this)

    then restart holding down alt for ages, and it came up with which disk to verify/repair

    I verified the HDrive and it said it was okay, then the external HD and that was okay too.

    Then I re installed Osx from the internet and now it seems okay, all the files are still there.

    Not sure why any of this happened but I thought it was dead with the dark blue screen,

    so I'm just saying keep trying carefully as I'd almost given up.

    Not saying it will last forever but it's back working for now...

    Who knows.

    Apart from my first total hard drive fail - any other time I have taken it to apple, they have said "logic board" or mother board, then I have persisted at home (as out of warranty) and it has finally come back to life. Seems like that is their default answer if they don't know.

    Bit scared to try time machining again now though! Was trying to be organised and look where it got me!

    Good luck!

    Looks as if you had a different problem. We can get the workstation to work as soon as we disable the discret video card. Interface effects and screen shifting    up to freezes are our symptoms.

    Another case here in Austria. Mine started to show this issue on Sunday. Managed to boot into single user mode, disable the drivers and at least do a backup of the hard disk. Now in for logic board replacement, which will cost EUR 650 plus a week of lost productivity, plus the knowledge that this may happen again, sooner or later. I'm pretty furious at Apple. Have been using Apple stuff for 20+ years now. My previous MacBook Pro (Early 2008) died after just three years, and now the same with the Early 2011 model, after 3 1/2 years. This is definitely not the quality I expect from Apple (and pay a premium price for). For comparison, I still have my 2005 PowerBook 12" and it still works (at least when on mains power, the battery is done).

    I have had mine replaced once under apple care a year and half ago and now it failed yesterday. I called apple and they told me I have to pay for the repair! Unbelievable! I am taking it into the genius bar today.

    A replacement logic board?

    If you're lucky it will last that long. Read some pages back and you'll see people that report functionality of a replacement board for a few weeks, or a few months.

    And after 90 days you simply have to pay for the next board again. Kind of really bizarre actually when you think about it. You pay €700 for a NEW board. And on that NEW hardware, they give 90 days warranty??????? How ironic to call that a LOGIC board :-D Where's the logic there..???

    Hi,

    What version of OS X are you guys running?

    It is kind of odd that for three years the system runs okay and then suddenly new boards break one after the other.

    The total arrogance by the Apple reps I have dealt with n regards to this issue is stunning. I've been an Apple customer for 20 years and have spent thousands of dollars on Macs, iPads, iPods, iPhones, etc. and this MacBook Pro will be my last Mac. No one I have spoken to at Apple really seems to care. In fact, the "genius" told me "good luck with Windows" and you will never find quality as good as Apple. I've been using Windows PC's in the corporate world for decades. I can live with Windows and what quality is this guy talking about when they are charging you for a defective design?

    In my business, I can not imagine having the arrogance to say "good luck" when an angry customer threatens to abandon our product.

    My late 2011 broke as well. Now it won't even turn on. This is clearly a manufacturer defect and I need a resolution.

    ha, ha... keep the complaints coming. It'l give me some ammo for tomorrow. I have a date at the Apple Store in Geneva. I am absolutely dreading to have to go there again. The last time I went there was in 2011 ! That was when my 2009 Macbook pro exhibited the exact same problem I am now having with a 2011 model. Reason for getting a 2011 model in the first place. Set me back 1900 Swiss Francs. Now the 2011 model is doing the same. Set me back 1800 CHF for a 2014 model.

    That's my nearest store too - I'll be very interested to know how you get on.

    My Early 2011 17" MBP packed up mid October and I had no choice (I use FCPX everyday) but to immediately buy the latest MBP to continue with my hobby/obsession. Much as I love FCPX I'm now thinking of switching back to Adobe Premiere Pro which at least runs on Windows as well as Macs.
