Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

EVERYONE new or not so new here. Please listen up.  I'm afraid that Apple can just ignore signatures, but they can't ignore actual repair cases sent to them. It's true what Carl Wolf said, anybody can sign anything, even if they don't own a MBP. But ONLY MBP owners can report repair cases, since you'll need to provide a serial number.

So please, contact Apple Care or Support, create a Fast Lane support and call (which is what I did 2 months ago), or if you like go out to see an Apple Genius. If you don't want to repair your machine that's fine but make sure your case is filed and insist that it gets forwarded to a senior engineer.

Someone here said that Apple hasn't done anything yet because they don't have enough numbers (case reports). So instead of posting here trying to find solutions, please report your case to Apple directly. We need more numbers.

It's really the best thing we can do for ourselves at the moment.  Even to the guys who are resorting to reflowing, please report your MBP case to Apple immediately. And it can even just be a phone call... I know that for some people, the Apple Store is a trek. Get those numbers in. I didn't repair my MBP, it is currently sitting in a cupboard doing nothing. But I did report the case.

Over last month's holidays, I was back at my parents' and my dad asked me to convert some files for him. So he handed me his laptop, which is an 8 year old Dell that looks like a joke and weighs like a brick. Windows??? Cringe... I almost immediately started laughing at it (in my mind), being the Mac snob that I am. But then I stopped when I realized that, hey.. between his old Dell and my laptop, which one of these is actually working? I humbly began converting the files.

I never thought I'd see the day....

Just had the logic board replaced and picked up last Friday. Within one hour of booting it up after a fresh install of Yosemite, I already had graphics glitches. Connected to an external monitor and I got a full screen of lines and blocks. Unplugging and plugging back in cleared it but I'm sure this is a sign of things to come. No way this lasts 90 days.

Apple support is terrible when you have one of their design lemons.

A lot of people already did that, is the first thing you do when you have the problem. They have thousands of thousands of cases archived.

Thousands of cases archived you say? Well, apparently, nowhere near enough. I'm pretty sure there are several people here who have not reported. I'm also pretty sure that there are actually people who are not saying anything about it and not reporting it either.. but are actually buying new machines entirely, simply because they don't have the time and they need to get work done.

I'm not saying signing something is bad. What I'm saying is that anyone who is going through this problem needs to first and foremost, report it to Apple, not go on the forum and complain, or put their signature down. If you have reported it to Apple by all means, sign and complain on the forum. I signed it myself.

I have the same issue w/ early-2011 15" MBP (freezing, grey, black screen, heat and high-fan,....).

I have sent/reported several crash dumps to Apple, w personal note as well. Just signed the petition and another forum.

Given there are so many known and reported cases, it is truly extraordinary for a corporation not to have done a proactive recall/fix on this. Its never too late to admit and take care of customers Apple. Pl act ASAP.
