Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I have had the gnu problem since June of 2014 and immediately started using gfxcardstatus. That is all I've been using for the last six or seven months and it has been going well as long as I don't use my second screen. I have not even tried iPhoto. But lately, I've been having trouble with Safari not loading. I can't restart, or I will (probably) get that screen of death so I am frustrated. I am really sick of this MBP.

Could someone please tell me how to find information on resoldering, if I should and where I can do it?

Is there any sticky post explaining? Is there another discussion? Why not update the first post with links and info?

    Thank you very much!

    I have this same/similar problem.

On Sunday, Jan 11, 2015, the display on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, early 2011) suddenly went gray. Machine now continually boots to gray screen instead of login screen despite multiple restarts, resetting PRAM, attempt to boot in single user mode, etc.

Attempts at booting from secondary drive partition and from external Firewire drive produce same result, which seems to indicate this is a hardware issue, as does the great volume of online information from users with same/similar problem.

    Apple, are you listening????!!!!

I have experienced the same exact problem in the last two weeks.  The only response I now receive from my $2,000+ paper weight is the opening chime and a fleeting apple icon before all goes gray . . .  I find it amazing that thousands of faithful Apple customers who have spent their hard earned money on machines that "just work" are being ignored.  I hope any and all pursuits by consumers will be successful in eliciting a response from Apple that will compensate for their faulty machines.  What a disappointment Apple . . .  Have you seen the 756 pages of comments?

Contact Apple and report your case immediately. By contact I mean actually speak to someone from Apple either personally at a Genius Bar or by phone. Apple needs to key the ever growing number of cases in.

Be aware that Apple will never see the MBPs that are not bought through Apple Stores, as usually, the seller will be held responsible for any problems. I tried to talk about my problems, with a Dutch AASP (MicroFix, Amsterdam) and a Dutch reseller (MacCity), with Margaret L., Executive Relations EMEIA, who basically told me that Apple does not care, and encouraged me to hire a lawyer. This is really convenient for Apple, as smaller resellers and service providers don't care about service, and can get away with murder, because it usually isn't economical to hire a lawyer for a relatively small case. So, Apple can defend their point that they do not know about the problem.

The same thing happened to my Early 2011 MBP after one year.

the failure was not detected at the time in the store where it was purchased. Since the frequency of display problems increases until...

    Same problem.

Last week my MBP mid 2011 (500 Go SSD + 8 Go ram / i7 bought brand new and expensive directly on applestore) crashes just when I was cleaning my desktop. A grey screen after booting... I 've done all of what I could do (until fsck and cleaning my drive in deep mounting it on my Imac with techtool 7). I called apple and they said I have to go to the apple center near home for diagnotic and we will talk after that. The day after it was ok... But saturday morning  I did not even touche it after bootig it and let it alone, it crash on a black screen. I boot on the recovery partition, re install maverick, it was ok but on sunday morning it crashes again without any reason. I 've brought it to apple center (No, I did not had apple care, but even if, now in 2015 the 3 years warrenty are over).  I brought it yesterday to apple center. This mbp is my work tool, I use it to work directly in my clients offices (editing video) and I need it a lot.

    Hope Apple will understand that.

I'm pretty ****** about this nonsense. $2400 for a defective computer after 2 years?? Apparently brand loyalty doesn't mean sh*t anymore because when I went to the Apple store and explained the issue on my mac (which really showed symptoms of the same issue that I thought were properly addressed when it was still under warranty) and showed them my history with the company's products, I was treated like a schmuck who didn't buy the extended care.

Pointing to this thread to reveal the validity of the systemic fault apparently meant nothing too, because "people write all sorts of crap on there and don't know what they're talking about."

I asked one of the store managers how it's possible, that when "premium" product fails on a wide basis, the company does nothing to address the consumer's purchase. I asked what the solution is for a common problem that doesn't come out the consumer's pockets. His response:

"If it is common, so much so that it's found as a defective part, Apple does recall the product"

A beat around the bush answer and denial of customer service until it is found to be "so much so" defective in court. Pitiful for a company that believes in "thinking differently" I feel cheated but I guess that's good ole business for you

Could anyone please help me, i just can't really underastand is it my GPU is dead or may be it can be a dead HDD?

My mac had not any video glitch. But 2 weeks ago it started to hang sometimes with glitch screen. One time it just turned off and started constantly playing starting chime untill a har reseted it. At last it stoped booting, but not at all. When i press power, there is no chime and i see a black screen, but i could hear that HDD and collers are working, and lower led on the right is permanently glowing. After that i thought it could not start again. But it booted again! I brought it to service, where support ofcourse told me that i should change a motherboard, they told me the price, and i hadn't such ammount of money for this time. Ok, i went home and in the evening tried to switch it on, and it started with no trouble. I worked a little bit on it with monitoring of GPU temp, and it were even lower thant i had before. And after that appeared first thing that made me thinking that it could be an HDD. It totaly hanged when almost all software were switched off, and i sellected to shutdown the power. It began to shutting down and stuck. After that hard reset and black screen without ane chime again.

Please tell me could that be just HDD problem? I really havent such ammount of money for now to replace a Logic Board, and HDD problem would make me much happier.

What amazes me more and more in this discussion is that Apple just lets it rage on without so much as a blink. Is this ignorance or is this arrogance? It makes me question my 30 year-loyalty to this brand...

If it is ignorance there is something really wrong with the way this site is managed (which I doubt). If it is arrogance it makes me sad, really sad, for being a loyal customer for all those years.

So I hope Apple will come up with another valid reason for not reacting to this thread. In any way. Come on Apple, 756 pages can't be all wrong!

Apple have recalled products for defective parts, iMacs had a defective video card and NVidia paid for Apple to recall and replace the cards. There have been others. So a truthful answer was given to you. If a defective part or process is identified it would be Apple's normal (past history) procedure to recall, replace or repair the product.
