Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

hey i am looking forward to try this.. unfortunately my dot key has not been working for a couple of months so i cant do that (just my luck)

is there any other way to achieve the same result??

    thanks for your help

    Yes, you can try this:

    OK, try this:

    1. Let you Mac cool down and remove any external display.

    2. Boot it and press cmd-s (Comand key + S) for single user boot.

    3. Wait until the the you can enter a comand (the prompt is root#)

    4. Type 'exit' and wait until the familiar login screen apears.

    5. As soon as your Finder comes up (if you have lots of Apps open, close them all) go to

System/Library/Extensions and create a new folder (you can name however you like) and move all the AMD and maybe also the ATI files into that new folder.

    Enjoy your 

In the Finder go to System/Library/Extensions and check whats in the _temp folder, in the Extensions folder should be no AMD file anymore. To be sure you can also move any ATI file to the _temp folder.

In my case there should be no ATI files in the extensions all of them are inside the temp.

    Thank you 2.

    Tomorow I will test Protools.

I wanted to share my experience with this issue and my MBP in general. This was my 4th Apple laptop, and in fact I bought two of these at the time, the other for my business partner. It has now been replaced by rMBP.

My first issue had to do with a faulty MagSafe adapter. The adapter would be plugged in, the charge icon would show in the menubar, the light would be on the adapter, but it wasn't actually charging all the time. Song story short this eventually trashed my battery which had to be replaced. I had to replace the MagSafe adapter as well. On my dime, $250ish. The tech who replaced it said the batter failed much sooner then it should have. Fail #1.

I called Apple about this issue. I told them that I had gone through my console logs and discoverd the my computer had been shutting down randomly during the first year of owning the laptop. At the time I had no idea this was related to the power adapter not working correctly per above.

GPU. I never felt like this laptop was preforming well, something always seemed to be off about it, and it got really hot. Several months ago when I had the battery replaced the GPU went out after only having it back for a few days. The tech who did my battery did the full diagnostic, siad it was the GPU, need a new daughterboard yada yada $500. He said it was odd the GPU failed so early. Fail #2.

I again called up Apple about this issue, and as well as the MagSafe problem. I talked to a support person, explained the issue, was told to send it in. I asked for the manager and talked with them. He told me they weren't aware of this issue. WHAT? "You aren't aware of this, there is a story about it on one of the Mac sites and there are tons of messages on your forum about it". He played dumb.

This is the worst Apple product I have ever owned, by far. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to expect a $2000 laptop to last longer then 2 years. I don't care if Apple care is only one year. If I wanted a computer that only lasted two years I would have bought an Asus or something.

Apple you need to own up to this issue and make things right with your customers.

Can someone post a number and reference link that we could call to collectively make complaints about this issue just so there's no doubt apple is aware of the issue?

No need for that, someone already made an email to Tim Cook and I filed that problem also to Apple. But you can file a Bug Report via this page:

Now my macbook is in for diagnosis and a possible $310 flat rate repair. If there's a recall I'll be refunded they said.
