Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

About him/his services on his site, but I can't post that here.

But here's a post of him on this forum: Re: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

If you're registered and logged in, all you need to do is hover his name and you'll be able to ask him all the questions you have.

Unless you wish to know more about my experiences with him, then hover my name.

He's situated in Belgium though, right next to Antwerp. I know one guy from Paris took the high speed train to visit him. Another guy from Italy sent his board by post and is about to get it back. So distance isn't necessarily a problem.

I have a LATE 2011 MacBook Pro 15". Just a couple of days ago I had the screen freezing, before I did have issues with the fan and the computer not going to sleep when I put it to sleep. I would just shut it down. Then a couple of days ago, while watching a programme on Chrome, TV programme it would just freeze. Nothing helped until I shut it down. It happened again. I shut the computer down and allowed it to cool, was working with photo editing and listening to the radio and then it went black with the music going around in a bleep loop. All I could do is shut it down. Went to the apple store in Iceland who knew exactly what it is, but I guess they are an apple retailer and not a "real" apple store, they told me of the class act and that apple is not acknowledging this issue. I contacted support, spoke to a senior tech, and they said all they could advice me was paying for a repair. I wanted them to acknowledge it and pay for the repair. So now I don´t know what to do. Pay for a new logic board and hope that there will be a recall. I paid for extra hard drive a matt screen and everything, so I feel really cheated. I never ever had a computer failing on me like this. At despair on what to do.

I was a firm believer in the brilliance of Apple.. My MacBook Pro late 2011 model with the AMD graphics card died today. I was in shock to find out this was such a huge common issue and Apple has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it. Over 35k people have signed the petition and Apple is simply ignoring it...it really makes me think about who I'm investing my money with and if I want to continue.  This is 100% Apple's fault, so keep fighting the fight people and hopefully we see some results. Take action and share on your social media!

    Here is one to ponder...

Was told by Apple today that "after evaluating my Late 2011 17" MBP (which had been in for its eighth trip for this issue), they have determined that replacing the logic board would not resolve the issue and therefore Apple would not be servicing my machine."

My reply (by phone to my designated Executive Office representative) was, "So are you saying that Apple recognizes that swapping logic boards does not resolve the design issue of this machine?" Their reply was, "No, we are saying that in your case it does not solve the issue and Apple will no longer service your MBP. You should buy a new machine and consider recycling this one."

That is the easy way out for Apple,

    Assuming it's a true story.

Stop manipulating this forum or leave.  If you believe Hal Feldman is lying, then say so explicitly, or shut up.

It's just another anonymous story, the web is full of them

I believe the ones that have some supporting evidence, but you can believe anything you want.

Apple moderator who removed my last comment.(and comments of others).. Please explain by posting here in this forum why unhelpful, snarky flaming comments of Csound1 that few if any subscribers to this thread find helpful and most find UNhellpful are allowed to remain,
And also please explain why the post(s) that contained a copy of the email from the law firm informing owners of MBPro '11 hardware of what is going on there was removed.

I once decided to clean the fans and I found that at the exit of the fans all the dust collects and obstructs the airflow. This may well be the cause of your overheating and increased noise level. open it, get the fans off and clean with a toothbrush. Don't touch the circuitboard, don't use a vacuum cleaner as the static electricity could damage some components.

    Apple moderator, you wrote -

This thread contains complaint about MBP's from 2008. 2010. 2011 and 2012, it also contains MacBooks, iMacs and even a mini,

It is not just about 2011 15" MBP's, even though you would like it to be.

FYI - I don't "want" this thread to "just" be about MBPros'11 but the fact remains that it primarily IS about MBPro'11.

So why don't you migrate others to another thread so they don't have to pour through all the comments about MBPro'11

BTW - your "reasoning" and "tone" sound a lot like Csound1. Is that you?

Carl Wolf - Why have I received a snarky, flaming reply from you that doesn't show up in discussion? obvioulsy having been removed right away.
FYI I don't "desperately" need for it to be true that Apple is conducting a psyop in this forum thread as you replied. But as long as some want to cast dispersions on the validity of consumer posts to this thread claiming problems with MBPro'11, then the possibility of an Apple psyop is just as plausible, since Apple must "desperately" need with its billions of dollars in revenue to "believe" that these problems are not the result of faulty design/engineering/production. Your "reasoning" and "tone" sound like the Apple moderator who tries to claim that a thread entitled 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card is NOT "just" about MBPro'11 and accusing me of "wanting" it to be.
Are you  the moderator of this thread? and is Csound1 your "alias" alter ego?

NO one but the Apple moderator has the authority to interpret and apply the Terms of Use or decide which posts violate such or delete such posts even though someone would like to be the moderator who's not. (or are they the moderator?)

So anyway I got my 15" Late 2011 MBP back from Apple - it was $310 to fix.  I brought it in on Monday and they had it back for me on Wednesday - nice turn around anyway. The Apple guy told me "Wow you really got a deal because this mainboard is usually a $600 part" at which point I laughed out loud.  How is it a great deal to have to pay for a fix that you should not have to pay for, that appears to be a design flaw in a VERY expensive computer. That just by using the device it will fail - just a matter of time. But I paid it and I'm now using my computer again.  We'll see how long this lasts.
