Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Just because there are some posts about Macs other than MBPro '11, doesn't mean that the thread isn't primarily about MBPro '11s.

I never insisted, implied, or whatever that the thread was ONLY about MBPro '11.

It doesn't bother me that others post here looking for help.

BUT the thread is about MBPro '11 hence it's title "2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card"
So your comment to me about it not being only about MBPro '11 no matter how much I'd like it to be" is just yet another example of your "tone" and "reasoning" that renders your comment useless and untrustworthy.
So instead of telling others to butt out, maybe you should take your own advice.

Please quote where I have told anyone to butt out,  back it up, don't make it up, you've done enough of that already.

You haven't literally said "butt out", but you have said or implied as much, and I shouldn't have to point out that distinction. You take an insulting "tone" with others who dare to "cross" you in the least yet your unhelpful comments remain in the thread whereas replies from others to you are removed even though those comments are not any worse than your own. You post in a foreign language, Cebuano, that "the truth is in use here" to someone who posted in French, for which there is no point to such useless information, yet the post remains in the thread. You call someone "childish", and now are going on and on about my "making things up", and that's only a sampling of your online behavior. IMO there is something very fishy about such way this thread is "moderated", and there is a line of suspicion that runs between Csound1, OGLETHORPE, Carl Wolf, et. al. stemming from the fact that replies to your tactless comments are immediately removed, but yours always remain in the thread.

From posting pictures of iMac screens and pretending they are pictures of MBP screens (even having the nerve to accuse Oglethorpe of trying to mislead you) to attributing statements to others that only existed in your mind. No further explanation is needed, we know you.

I never said the screenshot I posted was from a MBP. Stop putting words in my mouth.

You're polluting the thread with useless comments that the moderator for some suspicious reason or other never removes.

I won't aid and abet your juvenile behavior by responding to you ever again.

You obviously must be some kind of Apple forum "Truther" who gets some kind of thrill about being king of the hill.

Yet you posted it with the title 2011 Macbook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card, and you knew that it was not.

I'm wondering if the issues I describe below could be a result of the graphics card malfunction and especially since upgrading to Yosemite.  Since upgrading to Yosemite, my 2011 MacBook Pro 15" would take considerably longer time to boot.  I've had weird flickering of the screen which includes strange colored lines appearing, my computer overheats and the fan will sometimes run continuously for no apparent reason.  And as of yesterday, my computer will not boot AT ALL but gets stuck on a gray screen with the Apple Logo and a progress bar that freezes about a third of the way across.  And the computer overheats while it's trying to boot which causes the fan to run constantly.  My laptop is always in a stand which is slightly elevated on an angle for better air flow, thinking that would help to keep the laptop from overheating.

Also, I was able to do a hardware test using Option + D, even though my computer wouldn't boot.  The end result was "no trouble found".  Hmmmmm.

So in short, I have NO laptop at the moment.  Very frustrating.

I've read all over the internet that there are issues with this particular model.  Hoping Apple will do something to rectify this problem that so many users are having.  I was considering buying an iMac, but now I'm not sure.  Apple's reputation seems to be headed downhill recently. Maybe I'll just switch back to a PC.  :-/

I bought a 15" 2011 model about 3 months ago, it runs perfectly and it was cheap, I'll see if it continues to run correctly.

Macbooks Pros 2011 without discrete graphic card and just built-in Intel are having this problem also?

Do you know a reputable shop that will change the GPU chip for a decent price?

Does it run now?  Check the GPU temps.  Put it in accelerated mode and see what happens.

Can you get the 2011 for a righteous  price?  Way below market?

Then it might be a great buy.  If it works now ride it until it drops and then have the chip replaced.  The rest of the machine is proving to be pretty bullet proof.  According to reports on this and other threads few other problems are being reported.

There are places that will replace the chip for less than $400 USD.

    Worth considering.
