Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Greetings,

Update. I have received the reballed and cleaned (dissipators and thermal paste) machine back, and it works better and quieter than it ever did when I got it new! Viewed Prometheus in FULL HD on an external monitor. The temperature never never went above 55ºC and the fans kept under 3000 RPM....

When I got this machine new, it would heat up even when just idling and the fans would be blowing full throttle all the time. Now it is a paradigm of quietness and cool functioning. Will play some 3D games this weekend and keep you posted

For now, this machine has come back better than it ever was when shipped by Crapple. (So much for Crapple QA, I think it now means Quantity Assumption within Crapple, because if my MBP met the standards of Crapple QA at shipping, so much for Crapple....)

If you really depend on your MBP like I do, you cannot wait for Crapple to do something about this. You will be waiting until the cows come flying home.  Get a reball with leaded solder .

This is the last Crapple product that I have ever bought. Not even a phone from these *********. Zilch!

    Kind regards,

    JP

Are you still making money out of motherboard repairs that are sent to you instead of Apple?

    Do you work for free?

I don't have the conflict of interest that you have, my money does not come from business solicited from this board.

So I take it that you still profit from posters not turning to Apple but using your services, and giving money to you, is that it?

Surely wouldn't do yours without taking money for it.

I know, no need to comment, probably wouldn't happen anyway...

I work, and I bill for it.

I just don't use this board to get it, unlike you I have no financial interest in this issue.

Hi, i guess to have the same problem here. I own MacBook Pro purchased here in Italy on July 2011 (2.0 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3) running OSx 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) with AMD Radeon HD 6490M as discrete video card and Intel HD Graphics 3000 as integrated.

From january of this year it started to display artifacts on the screen (blue, red screen with orizontal lines) after about 30min of utilization, and had to force reboot everytime, since two weeks ago when it freezed completely and then fails in booting up (vertical lines at startup, then apple logo appears and doesn't enter in the system anymore).

    BEFORE

    NOW

Taking a look in previous thread i've seen that Apple suggests a logic card replacement in this case that doesn't solve the issue it's really frustrating considering macbook costs at that time.

Is there anyone experimenting the same problem who has found an alternative solution for this?

sorry having to welcome you, nicolotucci

to sum it up, you have two options.

either you pay apple to change your logic board that will fail and you might get a brand new computer after 4 failing 'repairs' or you try to find someone to fix the heart of the problem which is the cpu-gpu soldering.

browse a few pages back and you'll find lot of examples for these two options.

I chose the second one, happy with it.

In fact, should have to thank you for the free extra advertisement...

it's not a problem per say, but still, your point is not clear.

do you understand the question at all?

So you are using the site for commercial reasons, are you aware that is a violation of the terms of use?

Oh God, here we go again! For God's sake knock it off. Anyone else's post like such would be deleted by moderator and if enough deleted, threatened to be banned if done again. So everyone, please stop feeding the nuisance.
