Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I am curious how the multiple lawsuits will play out on this issue. At the risk of conjecture, I find it impossible that absolutely nobody at Apple knows about this issue, let alone a the number people who are responsible for making decisions that involve customers and product quality.

With proper respect and deference to the struggles of fellow MBP owners affected by this issue, I think your best option in the near-future is to file a complaint with the BBB, especially if you've already paid for a repair on this issue.

getstu, when you say "second" do you mean the Discrete GPU?
When you say "eventually replaced", what do you mean? Please briefly list all the hoops you had to jump through to get to this point where your '11 was replaced.

BTW - notice how when the "police" (moderators) show up here, they only enforce the nonsense -

The point is clear, maybe not to you but that is your problem.

it's not a problem per say, but still, your point is not clear.

do you question his judgment? legibility? ability? motivation?

    Motive.

    too bad.

    what about yours?

I have no commercial interests here, unlike D3us I make no money out of this.

    Now, what are your motives.

Like D3us already pointed out (but you don't want to hear), you're the one constantly advertising.

    not him.

he is mostly spending his time here providing explanations to people asking for some understanding.

wish I could say the same about you.

but even if he were, what would you care?

do you really think the community needs to know how you feel about it?

    no.

I don't believe anything you say, you have already demonstrated that the truth is a bystander in your posts, this is no different.

Hi nicolotucci,  for now you can try resetting the NVRAM and PRAM - that may bring it back for a short period (if you haven't already tried that).  If you bought it in the EU you may be able to get it repaired by Apple free of charge.  Under EU law there is cover for a consumer for between 4 and 6 years (depending on the circumstances).  On the Apple UK website it states "Consumers have the right to choose whether to claim service under the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty or under their consumer law rights."  I rang them, went through to support (ignored it when it told me my device was out of warranty and I would have to pay), when I got through to someone I explained that I had the known 2011 MBP GPU issue and wanted to make a claim under EU consumer law, they acknowledged that I am within my right to make the claim under consumer law - they logged it and provided me with the details of an independent Apple Authorised repair centre that I could take the Mac into.  I've taken it in, its been assessed and the store has submitted the paperwork to Apple under consumer law for a replacement Logic Board (I'll know next Monday if its been accepted or not)

The main thing they asked for was the original invoice proving that it was bought in the UK.  It's probably worth a try - see what they say in Italy

Obviously you can not back up your statements, you're just another one who makes stuff up. Nothing new here.

Each nation has it's own laws, there is no EU wide consumer law anywhere close to the UK's 6 year span. If you read this thread you'll find posts regarding other nations consumer laws.

"Consumers have the right to choose whether to claim service under the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty or under their consumer law rights."

The UK does not require that you abrogate your Apple warranty (if still in force) the consumer law is additional to, rather than instead of.
