Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yes this is what I am thinking, it makes no sense to have a repair program and then have customers keep coming back, I suspect they have come up with a more permanent fix we shall see...

Really hoping they come up with something more permanent. I, as well as everyone here have agonized over this for YEARS (for me, it was more like 6 months). A lot of time, energy and $ wasted. I really don't want to have to go through this all over again.

rennyz27- It's not a crazy thought. At some point they might start replacing with new and different logic boards that actually work. They haven't done that yet, but it would surely be less expensive for them to find a way to do that. It either has to be that, or start offering replacement laptops in my opinion.

Exactly. Time will tell I guess!

came across this in the latest issue of NewYorker, from Jony Ive (talking about "design") “At the risk of sounding terribly sentimental, I do think one of the things that just compel us is that we have this sense that, in some way, by caring, we’re actually serving humanity,” he said. “People might think it’s a stupid belief, but it’s a goal—it’s a contribution that we can hope we can make, in some small way, to culture.”

Handling of this issue, thread and customer service around MBP-2011s has been completely opposite of "caring and serving humanity",

Why make paying customers suffer so much (anguish, time, money, lost work, productivity, ...), for internally known issues??? - complete anti-thesis of caring !!!

csound1 has been plain, simple uncaring/nasty - I have nothing against him personally, as he is just a paid messenger - but the chain/silo that oversees people like csound1 bothers me a lot. Hope this is/was not a sign of Darkness/Rot setting in the Apple core.

@vsingha2k — "One bad Apple spoils the whole bunch."

Remember what the Western symbolism is of a bitten apple, before Apple Computer, INC. came along at this late date and confiscated that ikon (Greek:image) for its Self, for its "logo"? (Not for the glory of the Logos)

It was an omen from the start of Apple things to come.

I have a QCore i7 with AMD and Intel graphics chip MacBook Pro early 2011 too.

Logic board has been replaced by the greatest Belgian official Apple service center about 1,5 years ago after severe issues with the original logic board, and I'm having EXACTLY the same issues again. I couldn't request to replace the motherboard with a type that doesn't have the AMD graphics chipset, or I would've done that.

The machine (both with the original and the replacement logic board) works OK for some time after booting (time is always different... one time it runs fine for 7hours, one time issues start after 10 minutes), slows down a bit, starts to 'hang' (services or programmes not responding), artifacts might appear in the displayed image and most of the time the screen freezes for 10 seconds, and a Kernel Panic happens, forcing the machine to hard-reset itself.

Sometimes the screen just stays blank after I push the power button, the keyboard lights up though. I then have to long-press the power button again to force-powerdown the machine and try again.

I have had the RAM, ssd disk tested and replaced, but no issues there. The original logic board didn't allow me to start up anymore after a while. I had to start OS X in 'Safe Mode', withouth any graphics acceleration.

gfxEnabler: tried it to force my card into 'intel-only', but that only holds for a little longer than otherwise. The system _will_ force-reset itself at some point, most of the time in the middle of really important work I'm doing on the machine.

How can Apple neglect and ignore the fact that so many users have issues with the _same_ batch/model/type of machine??? I don't understand.
Service centers happily charge you for the replacement of the logic board, around € 600 every time. The 3-6month service warranty mostly just runs out a few weeks until the issues pop up again.
    What can we do???

Jobs sent us a few coffee cups in the 1970s.  I wish I still had them.  The logo then was Newton sitting under a tree and an apple falling towards him.  What I can't remember for sure is the apple its self, I think it had colored strips.  That is what I see in my minds eye but I am not sure.  Any one?

Hey thanks .... that's close.  I don't remember the frame or ribbon.  Remember it was on a coffee cup so there was a lot less detail than what is shown so it looked good on the coffee cup.

I must have some pictures in a box someplace that caught a coffee cup sitting on a work bench or desk.  Time to look through the depths of the basement.
