Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Thanks for the info Darrell.

Sounds like there may be no easy way to get our machines operating at original graphic speed again then..?

    That'd be a bummer..

    FINALLY:

    https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

If the repair is just another board with the same flaw, it isn't really a permanent solution, but at least we won't have to pay for something that isn't our fault.

And good news if you paid for repairs prior to this program:

    Additional Information

Apple is contacting customers who paid for a repair either though Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to arrange reimbursement.  If you have not been contacted, but paid for a repair that you think was due to this issue, please contact Apple.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the MacBook Pro.

The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until February 27, 2016 or three years from its original date of sale, whichever provides longer coverage for you.

    Hello, MGSH

Great news, thanks for sharing it so soon.

But I don't have an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store in my country ( Lebanon ).

The question is: how much time do we have until this program end?

    Thanks ..

I had a replacement of the logic board, just a few days ago. After long discussions with apple, who said just last week that there are no replacements, and when I said there are known issues, she just said there are no replacement program me for this.

In the end, in my country we have a one year guarantee for logic boards, and as we don´t have an official apple store, it is a retailer who were really nice, gave me a discount and lent me a machine in the meantime.

So I opted paying for a logic board.

Now - I wonder if it is the old refurbished one or the permanent solution as this was just last week. Well on friday they received the logic board, and I got my computer 4 days ago.

How do I find out if it is a new or old refurbished logic board?

Yes, that is correct. The program starts on the 27th of this year in all other countries.

And I answered your question correctly: You have until February 27th 2016 to repair your MBP.  What is the problem?

If you repaired your MBP before the repair program began, then you most definitely have a refurbished logic board installed in your computer.

The truth is, no one knows for sure if new logic boards will be used in this official repair program. I only speculated since it just doesn't make sense for Apple to offer a repair program and use old logic boards, knowing by now that the refurbished ones break down all over again. I just think there's a higher chance for any logic boards replaced from February 20th onwards to be new ones, but I don't know for sure. I guess you could ask the Apple people when you go in for repairs.

Yes, but if you need your expensive computer to work and cannot pay for the abusive costs at an apple store or an authorized partner, got your computer repaired after months suffering without computer and just got your computer fixed yesterday by another company, what do we do? apple should also pay for the one who had to run a different road. and aditionnaly i´m also worried if this repair i got will survive any longer. Is anyone also at the same point?

I demand a solution also for this case. Apple´s lack of responsibility is still going on. In fact, they only agreed to fix the computers because of a law suit. Who knows what will come with their new computers

Apple should reimborse the money for those who got the computer fixed at a third store and not at an apple or authorized store cause could not pay for such abusive repair costs for a programmed obsolence and problem from fabric. It´s ridiculous! They are still leaving their customers in lurch!

Apple has been recycling logic boards real fast over the past year, so I wouldn't expect more than a quick reflow.

kayazuki — Google "forums appleinsider 2011 MacBook Pro graphics class-action suit expands, accuses Apple of concealing defects"

That article quotes law firm as having sent out email reading "Specifically, we allege that between early- and late-2011, Apple released a software update that dramatically reduced the graphical performance of the GPUs in order to prevent them from reaching temperatures that would cause the GPUs to effectively self destruct." So if that's true, I doubt if reinstalling ML will fix the issue since the early 2011 MBPro shipped with  Snow Leopard 10.6.6. My guess is there's some firmware that was installed, possibly as part of and update to the OS or as a "Security" update perhaps as early as late/last version of Snow Leopard, which then was included with all OS going forward which I think would be typical for any such legitimate type of change.

That case has been dismissed, unproven, why are you leaving that part out?

Oh, it's you, now I understand why only part of the facts are in the post.
