Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Yeah, I've had 2 from yesterday deleted too. Still incorrigible, like a brick wall.

Have you considered adhering to the terms you gave your word that you would?

Per Ayn Rand's "objectivism" so admired, loved and adhered to in Silicon Valley, I am not in violation of the ToU.

Please, backup your statements with actual facts and sources that support your claims.

I don't know how much more proof you need that you are wrong, but the case is still pending. It has not been dismissed. Additionally, there is another sperate, and still active lawsuit pending in Canada....

Can you not understand that there are two cases?

read the link I provided, it refers to case number one, the one that has been dismissed already.

    And so it begins....

Customers have reported volumes of 2011 MBPs for sale in Apple's stores, have they been subjected to the repair standards some have experienced with their costly repairs and repeated cycles of repairs?

One of my jobs in a past life time was to find and fix manufacturing processes like Apple's.  Find where we built the problem in and repair that part of the process.  Associated with that effort was to retrieve all faulty production products and repair them.  Step one find the problem.  Step two determine a correction.  Step three test the correction.  Step four assess the correctness of the correction, which involves creating tests that never existed before, for had the tests existed the problem would not have reached the customer.  Step five determine if whether to return to step one or to step six.  Step six gather the information to repair all previous production.

We are about to find out if Apple did step four or is hoping for another firmware update to delay the problem once again.

    And so it begins....

A sincere thank you to everyone on this board who helped to bring this issue to Apple's attention through discussion and comments. Especially to those who actually helped to work on people's Macbook Pros and fix their graphic issues, through reballing and the like. I think that may have helped Apple to see the fact that there was a very real solution, which confirmed that there was a very real problem.

Fantastic news - I will let all my reballed users know and put all their claims in with Apple providing their invoices who didnt take the small claims/SOGA option to get their money back.

You took your blooming time though Cupertino but finally you've done the right thing.

The terms state that reimbursement is available for repairs carried out by Apple or an AASP, there is as yet no mention of repairs carried out by third parties. This may of course, change.

My early 2011 MBP died 3 weeks ago.  Bought a 2014 rMBP.  My support page says it is not eligible for free repair.  Thanks a lot Apple.

Where are you ? If you are not in the USA or Canada, that's probably normal, as the rest of the world is only covered as from the 27th February.

I hope that is the case anyway, as I'm in the same case as you at the moment, here in France.

I have lived in west central Florida for 31 years.  It is a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011).  It is on the list of affected models.  However, it is a BTO with the high-resolution screen.  I am waiting for support to call me at 3PM eastern time.
