Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Do we need to enter the actual gfs card model?  We do this for both AND and ATI..I did this ans it said the AND file couldn't be found..

    It is actually AMD.

You just type the commands as they are: mv AMD*.* _temp

After I moved the ATI files to the temp folder and rebooted both finder (new windows) and console would crash immediately on open.

I rebooted into safe mode and moved the files from the _temp folder back to the extensions folder, but then got an error that they were not installed properly.

I think I need to run disk repair but do not have my lion disk ... are there any other alternatives to fix the issue? Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit: here is the crashlog for console

If you have Mountain Lion or Mavericks intalled, you don't need to move the ATI files.

After you moved the back the the ATI files from the _temp folder, you need to restart the Computer.

FWIW - after an Apple Store Depot replacment of my late 2011 logic board, the SMC version is the same as it was before - 1.69f4. Still working fine.

"the system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/ATI1600Controller.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact the products vendor for an update"

This error happens when attempting to create a new user.

What error do you get with gfxcardstatus when you try to switch to integrated? I had a similar issue and am tweeting with the developer @codykrieger to figure it out ...

my error was cannot switch due to external monitor dependency even though no monitor was plugged in (or any other device)

Weird, your firmware doesn't look right for the late 2011 model. This is the number for the early 15" 2011 model.

Yep, noticed that before I had the board replaced. Not much I can do about it however - Just enjoyting the fact that it's working properly. I don' think the issue is related to software or firmware - just bad hardware.

I've noticed, while following this thread, that I've SMC version 1.69f4, too, on my late 2011 (manufactured February 2012).

And I've not had any problems...
