Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Can you post two pictures, the first with the Harware Overview:

I too am on SMC version 1.69f4 -- I had LOADS of trouble starting in August (I assume I upgraded to this firmware when it was first available, likely in the Spring/Summer timeframe as I tend to keep my Macs up-to-date as much as possible).

So if the SMC version 1.69f4 excellerated the demise of the GPU (which is entirely possible), then all the things I have done since have more-or-less "stabilized" my machine and it now is reliable whereas back in Aug/Sep/Oct I lost countless hours dealing with a failing and unreliable MBP.

    YMMV

Here's where some of my confusion comes in... both the 15" Early MBP and the 15" Late MBP are listed with the model identifier of "MacBookPro8,2". To further confuse me, the SMC version of 1.69f3 is listed as correct for my Late 2011 model and yet my actual SMC version is 1.69f4. Date of manufacture is February 2012. And I've NOT experienced any of the graphics problems that others report.

    I just find that... strange...

saramwrap- Not that I want to disagree with you but, using the graphic in your summary about this problem we can see a spike in the reports of the glitch.

I absolutely agree with that assessment of the survey results - but I also think that the survey results are irrevocably skewed by when I began collecting data  (July 2013).  The trend in these support threads is for very high user turnover.  I spent a while logging the posts in the main three threads and very few users in most threads stuck around for more than a few posts.  People show up, share stories, share ideas, get a fix (or give up), and move on.  This has some significant detrimental effects in our discussions: (1) useful or interesting information is not retained or maintained, (2) we rarely follow cases long enough to see long-term outcomes (such as how 2011 and 2012 logic board replacements have held up), and (3) we really only see other users who are from the same "generation" in the thread at the same time.

This means that most of the users who are likely to have seen and responded to my survey are people who were in the conversation June 2013 through now.  I don't think I'm getting a representative number of responses from individuals affected before that period of time, so personally, I don't pay much attention to it (I'm far more interested in which models are affected and what people may have done to solve their problems).

I have MacBook Pro 15 Early-2011 and I am getting this problem after updating to the Mavericks OS and it is really annoying to I have used gfxCardStatus to keep it of the AMD card and use to Intel one and it has caus alot of trouble for me as I am not able to use the heavy softwares anymore and SMC ver. is 1.69f4. Hope they fix it soon my AMD card still works and only gives error when using heavy software for a long time. So just waiting for any software update or recall to be done so that this thing is solved. Don't know when will it come and I am going to buy the new Haswell MacBook Pro 15 and hope it doesn't have some issues like this and this gets fixed too, I really need two laptops and Apple please get this fixed soon.

I just had got my mbp 8,2 back from an AASP with a new (refurbished?) logic board.

The SMC version is 1.69f3 with no option to update.

My old logic board was 1.69f4.

My replacement board on the 8,3 came with 1.70f3. I think they'll always be upgraded to the latest version first thing by Apple, however it came with the first released Thunderbolt firmware which is a good indication to me that I actually received a new board.

8,3 could be early or late 2011 17" - can you use your serial number at http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html and let us know the date of manufacture?

Same thing happened to me. But kext's did not install properly when I moved them back. I am trying "kext wizzard" now to reinstall the kext correctly.
