Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I used to use the external monitor every day for 2 years before the chip started acting up.. I just ran several graphics intensive programs....no impact... it feels like a new computer... don't know how long it will last but it seems to be working like when I bought it in 2012.....

    Hi everybody,

I handed in my 2011 15" MBP last wednesday, Since in Germany the replacement program started on friday I'm still waiting the repair to be competed.

I had no Problem with the 16GB Ram or the "not original" harddrive.

According to the technican the replacement logicboard is different to the old one and the GPU has a lower TDP. So there should not be a problem with the gpu anymore.

As long as my mbp works another couple of years im am satisfied with this solution, but we will see if it does so

Have a nice day without graphic issues

Talking about stress tests ... my mbp is anaesthetised as we speak. I just learned to know that my ASP uses the Heaven Benchmark method for stress testing:

I suppose you get a troubled mbp GPU on its knees in minutes with this.

Hi - I've been waiting for Apple to take care of things and I believe that today is the day here in Europe.

In the autumn of last year I stopped using my 17" Early 2011 MBP after it displayed the massive pixels and stripes, packed up completely, wouldn't restart at all and my local dealer confirmed I had the logic board problem. However, I said I'd wait this out and not opt for Euros 800 of repairs etc as I thought I'd wait to see if/when Apple came clean on this.

Anyway, two days ago I dusted the machine off, pressed the on switch and it's been working perfectly ever since! I've had full screen Youtube going continuously and simultaneously with a long Encore DVD authoring project and a long FCPX HD 'Share' and OK, the fans are running and it's warm to the touch, but nothing serious.

My question is, might there be a more intense/demanding routine/program combination that I can run to push the machine even more? I don't believe these machines can simple heal themselves.

    Many thanks for any advice.

If you have one at your disposal, connect your MBP to an external display and run all those programs again.

Ok, that's good news then. Can't wait to get my MBP back!

Take it in.  Apple has its own diagnostics suite that is supposed to detect the problem.  Sometimes, the machine fails the tests immediately; in some cases, it takes a little longer.  Just don't let anybody convince you that half a year of sleep and a thick layer of dust sometimes solve the problem.

I took it in saturday night and this morning they called me that it was ready and the new logic board passed all the tests. However the guy told me there were still some glitches due to the software and he asked permissions to restore the OS. I asked him not to do this because most probably this was due to the fact that I moved the AMD drivers! Now once I get it back tonight I will try move them back to their place and see if everything works normally! Hopefully it will! Afterwards I will run the Heaven stress test!

Same happened with mine, but a few re-boots soon brought back the pyjama stripes

If not, BEFORE repair would seem a good time to stress it. I don't understand all these people who get their freshly repaired machine back, and then do all they can to try and kill it

It's like getting your car back from repair and leaving it running overnight with the accelerator jammed down to the floor, just to see if the engine will hold out

You wouldn't do it with a new computer either, would you ? Perhaps some people do, and it's just me who finds this behavior weird

Mine's due out of repair this week (I'm in Europe)… I shall just be using it normally, even if it does take another 3 years for it to give up the ghost

I also ran the Heaven benchmark test, handled it like a champ, the temps go up the fans go up but there were no problems noted, once the test completed the gpu goes down to a normal level. So far I am pleased. Was told when I brought it in that this is a new board not refurbished and I have to say it is acting like it....all the best to your computer coming back like new

Given a lot of people have had previous repairs fail within 90 days, the reason users are burn testing their machines could be to see whether or not repairs under this new program will fail before February 27 2016. Then there are those users that bought a MBP for heavy duty work and expect a certain level of performance.

Personally, when mine is returned, I shall be using it to power an external display for both work and entertainment; I think that is perfectly reasonable (although it is what killed the 2 previous logic boards/GPUs).

Can anyone with a working system make a list of all the AMD files they have in the /System/Library/Extensions folder?

Since I had to remove them twice I don't want to miss any of them!

    Thank you!!
