Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Then why don't you tell Apple, no one here can refund money that you paid to your State taxation authority.

    I have told Apple...

I'm not asking anyone on here to refund me anything. The reason I posted was to inform others of my situation and to see if others had experienced the same. You know, like people do on forums.

It's a bit of semantics stating a desired outcome as "refund" or "reimbursement" .  If the state tax department gave the money back it's refund.  If some other entity gives you funds that matches the tax it reimbursement.

Bottom line: you get the money in hip national bank.

With Richard and jimoase having a back and forth that might give readers the impression only Apple is doing free replacements, I want to make sure everyone knows that Apple Authorized Service Providers can do them, as well. I'd advise calling first and verifying the service provider you've chosen is, in fact, doing them. My experience with my local shop was perfect. Free, friendly, no need for an appointment, no waiting for hours, in and out in two days, and they fixed my screen hinge.

It's the government of the state that is responsible, you paid taxes to them.

Government employees are often best served by creating complexity i.e.. forms for procuring forms kind of complexity.

No doubt there is a form for getting a tax refund if the business transaction that created the tax is reversed.  Further that refund process, if it exists, is also controlled by government employees who need to justify their job with additional complexity all in the name of "for your own good".

Ah yes, obfuscation is a government favorite, so what's new?

I took my Early 2011 MBP in yesterday to the Apple Store, and they ran the GPU test and it PASSED!!  Thank God!  I have some other problems with my Mac like battery, optical drive not working, and logic board issue (not related to GPU) and the Apple Technician told me about a $310 flat rate repair fee where Apple will repair EVERYTHING wrong with the Mac for that $310...  The repairs I need would be about $900- $1,000... So I will pay that $310 then sell my mac for  anew one.

you are absolutely correct! I did not even bother going to the Apple Store. I work in an office where we process print files all day, so a suite full of 30 or so MBPs running all day. Our tech guy checked mine over and with no success said "Apple makes you call and make an appointment. Just walk in to Microcenter and they'll take care of it. They even expedite Mac products."

In & as I said before, diagnosed and fixed in 48 hours.

A few threads back someone was mentioning that he was "downgraded" from a 2.3ghz to a 2.2ghz. Same happened to me I went back to the Apple store and they replaced the LB without any problems, if you paid for a 2.3 then you should get a 2.3 ! ! !

Just wanted to report back here that I am experiencing problems with my Apple LED Cinema Display 24" connected to my repaired late 2011 MacBook Pro 17".  When I woke the MBP up this morning the workspace on the LED Cinema Display that was displaying Safari was rather "pixelated".  This had happened occasionally before the repair, so I don't know whether this problem is related to the video issues that the repair addressed.  Unplugging the display from the MBP and then connecting it again seems still to be the workaround.

    Is anybody experiencing this problem?

    buddhaauthor,

Yes, Apple Authorized Service Providers also do the repairs for free.  This, and many other things, got lost in the sub-discussion that you mention.  In my posts I include them when I say that "Apple" is the only option for free repairs and only distinguish between Apple Stores, Apple Service Centers and Apple Authorized Service Providers when one of those handles the program differently from others.

I put together a small YouTube video, demonstrating the problem I'm seeing on my MBP. The worst part of this bug is it takes out all the audio on my MBP whenever it decides to show itself, usually if I receive a call via FaceTime.

After replacing my logic board (mbp 15" early 2011), my read/write speed went extremely low.

    OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.2)

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)

Processor: 2.2 GHz Inter Core i7)

    Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Storage: Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series.

Note: I've reformatted my SSD and updated to the latest firmware DXM06B0Q but read/write speed still the same)

Before logic board replacement (i recall)

    Read: 400 Mbps

    Write 500 Mbps

    After logic board replacement:

    Read: 30 Mbps

    Write 165 Mbps

Can somebody please help me with this?
