Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

My 15” MBP Early 2011 finally kicked the can last week. I sent it off for repairs and came back to me a few days later. They replaced the logic board with a refurbished one (it didn’t have any serial numbers or identifying marks on it) At first, I was having all sorts of issues, most notably extremely long boot times on shutdown / restarts. After the usual troubleshooting (NVRAM resets, etc) things seemed to iron themselves out.

However, lately I have been experiencing a new issue that is very concerning. I have my computer attached to a Thunderbolt monitor and without warning, the display goes completely black. After unplugging / replugging the display from the TB port, the display turns back on and works as usual. But the problem seems to be occurring more frequently, and it reminds of me the symptoms my machine was experiencing just prior to the the graphics failure.

Here are the relevant parts of the Console reading:

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the console readout if that’s helpful.

Well I finally got my 2011 MBP 15 back after it taking Apple 8 days to replace the logic board. Fingers crossed, so far it seems to be OK and even seems to be more responsive - now I swapped out my RAM and HDD upgrades to put it back in its original state before I returned it and so far I'm running with that and booting from an external SSD via USB but it still feels quicker. Next step will be to open it up, replace the drive with the SSD and 16Gb RAM and check all still OK. Just need to catch up on a bit of work first.

I've also got my MBP connected to a Thunderbolt display, bought both together and interestingly, since the start I experienced times when the display didn't connect or just suddenly showed a black screen. I understood it to be a 'known issue' as several reports were doing the rounds so I just lived with it. Since this logic board was replaced however, it does not seem to have happened at all yet (hope I'm not speaking too soon).

Whilst I was waiting for them to fix this, I spent a bit of time upgrading an old white Macbook circa 2007 - I'd just got it back to a working machine when they called to say my MBP was fixed. I've now finally managed to get it running Mountain Lion so can transfer and work on files between the two. At least I'll have a backup machine now if it goes pear-shaped again!

My 2011 MBP was as reliable as a Swiss watch till the keyboard started failing. The logic board and bottom case were replaced under a three year AppleCare warranty at the Apple Store in Alderwood Mall, Seattle in December last year.

Problem solved. Except for the fact that the new logic board came complete with a faulty GPU. Since then, the MBP has been in three times to an Apple repairer in Chiang Mai, Thailand:

    1. Logic board replaced - same problem happened almost immediately but this time, the GPU didn't fail Apple's graphics test, so the technician claimed it was a software issue.

    2. So they formatted the drive and reinstalled OS X - same problem after a couple of days.

    3. So they replaced the logic board again.

So far so good after two days but I'm not holding my breath. All up, I've been without my computer for over four weeks across four different repair attempts. The store has been great but like everyone else, I have no idea what they're actually putting into my Mac - new spec board, old board (and they're hoping for the best), refurbished board.

It's a **** poor show from Apple - some clear communication would go a long way to making me feel comfortable about the products.

Let's see what happens this time....at least the repairer is just around the corner in case I need to go back.

Do remind Apple that your patience is not boundless, and you would appreciate a solution to the problem instead of just another attempt to solve it.  Some people have reported in this discussion that Apple has given them a new machine after three failed attempts to solve the GPU problem.

thought i'd pop in and give you all a good giggle. sitting here doing my thing, playing a couple games & watching Mad Men reruns and the screen goes black. I'm thinking "(expletive) here we go again, just like the others said."

nevermind the fact that the battery warning just hadn't popped up and it was just out of juice. guess it does help to plug the thing in!

I took my 2011 15" MacBook Pro to my local Apple Store who replaced my logic board under the 'MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues' on Tuesday 5th May, the part arrived on the 6th May and it was ready the same day I took it in to be fixed (7th May).

Even though it passed their video test in store, I had pictures of the computer video failing on my phone, which they looked at with an immediate look of familiarity (pursed lips and nodded head and an almost roll of the eyes - it was clear they'd seen this before).

Anyway, yeah, they replaced my logic board but now I'm having constant memory issues! The computer will crash and either; 1 - Hang with sound repeating or; 2 - crash with three loud beeps (signalling RAM is either broken or not seated correctly). So I've tried 3 different RAM kits (2 Crucial kits that work in other Macs fine and one Apple kit that came in the laptop originally), all have the same problem when I move the computer slightly.

So basically I've diagnosed that the RAM slots or the RAM clips on the new logic board do not embrace the RAM sticks properly causing a very loose connection and when the computer is moved (slid on a table, screen adjusted, picked up, etc...) the RAM modules dislodge by a tiny amount, but enough to cause a problem. I have booked this in at the Apple Store on Thursday and will keep you updated.

I'm just writing this here in case it's some other widespread problem with all these new boards they're replacing peoples' with.

Got my computer back on the same day I took it in for the second repair and all is working fine!

I have to agree with Richard on what he said.  I am currently in the UK but I originally bought the machine in Hong Kong. I have the top of the range one and after 2 display changes, 5 Logic Board changes (4/5 due to GPU issues) and pretty much everything in the machine which luckily was free due to having AppleCare.  The in-store Geniuses and Team Leader finally told me after 1/2hr of discussions with me and the staff members who fixed my machine that due to failure of the boards being so high on my machine, have decided to replace my 2011 machine with the 2014 rMBP and hopefully it will arrive next week!

Congratulations! Patience and doggedly persisting in changing the logic boards seems to work now for a number of us. After 4 logic board changes I got my mid 2014 rMBP in January and, touch wood and cross my fingers for the future, it's been working perfectly since.

    Good luck with yours!

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum but I can't seem to find a definitive answer and looking through 864 pages of posts isn't really something I have time for. So I'll just ask, is the graphics card that causes the issues with the logic board the discrete or integrated card?

If one were to stress test their MBP and use gfxcardstatus, should you use the discrete or integrated card or allow switching between the 2?

Hi mamihlapinatapai! its the discrete card (AMD) one that causes the issues with the logic board.  I find using Geeks3D GPU to stress test very helpful in seeing if the card has a problem or not.

Well it's been a week or so and my 15" is running like a champion after the second logic board replacement and an OS reinstall.

I still have an eerie feeling every time I kick Photoshop or iMovie into life... just waiting for the screen to go crazy again. Not a good feeling but I assume it'll go away if the Mac keeps running properly this time.

I'd also like to post an update since its a week since I got my MBP 15 2011 back after logic board replacement. So far so good...

I put my 16Gb RAM back in along with 750Gb WD Black HDD and it might be me but it seems to be a bit more responsive. I previously had a Crucial SSD as the boot drive and the WD in the Superdrive slot - I've not done that this time, just in case, but it seems as quick as when using the SSD. Bizarre. Before it was fixed I had also experienced regular intermittent Bluetooth dropouts but so far, I haven't once lost the mouse connection.

I've not really thrashed it much yet but it has handled image processing of large RAW files pretty well, along with searching large image library files in Capture One - that was where it used to turn the fans on most and actually what I was doing when it finally died.

I keep getting a brief uh-oh moment every time the screen goes black for a moment but so far... (fingers crossed)
