Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

My macbook is almost dead for a week now and no sign of me paying 45k rs for the logic board replacement so I found someone in delhi who's gonna replace the AMD chip and that will cost 15k for everything. No other choice better than keeping 1.25lac lappy as a dead paperweight.

That sounds great..15k for everything. I live in Nagpur, any chance I can get mine fixed as well?

    Thanks.

Since one week, aftere almost two years flawless operation, my 15" MBP (8.2, late 2011, 2.2 GHz,AMD 6750, MacOSX 10.7.5) randomly freezes resulting in a split and scrambled screen with 2 inch vertical black bar in the middle and the lest side of the screen on the right and vice versa, or a blue screen with vertical gray lines. I have browsed through this forum so I am not going to post similar images of frozen laptops.

I have run all known tests and resets and hardware test, which did not identify any problem. Having read the discussions forums I am worried that the problem which apparently affects many users is not going to be solved permanently when replacing the GPU or Logic Board, which is an expensive repair. Replacing the logic board is simply a standard procedure.

I have been a loyal Apple customer for almost 25 years and need the machine for my work. Switching to the intel card is NOT a fix and certainly not a solution for VJ's. I and many with me would appreciate to receive a word from Apple that the issue is recognised and that Apple helps it's community with a proper solution. Everyone should address the issue to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

My few cents. The AMD GPU is flawed design; replacing it with the same GPU is not a solution. There seems to be a problem with the fan/heating which is a design problem.

My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is still at the Apple Store in London. After initial diagnosing I received the email response pasted below. How do I move forward with this?

"We have attempted to repair your machine by erasing all the data off your machine and reinstalling the latest operating system, Mavericks. This has not resolved the issue of the screen going black when in use. The issue has occurred again for a very short and brief few times once the machine had fully turned on and after testing the issue did not appear again.

I'm sure the issue will more likely occur again, to repair the machine we would need to replace a part known as the main logic board. This repair is very expensive and will come roughly to £418.80 GBP."

Let me just sum up the thoughts in this thread..APPLE WE WANT THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED NOW!!!! I can't get any work done on this 2500.00 paperweight you call a computer. If you told me this computer would went to scrap in 2 yrs I would have never bought the thing. DO YOU REALIZE HOW EXPENSIVE YOUR COMPUTERS ARE??? You think we have money to throw away? I get it..you don't your computers to last, you want to keep us buys new computers. While it makes sense you to put profit above quality, this strategy will backfire!

I had similar issue. I solved it by going to Energy saver in settings and selecting/deselecting 'automatic graphics switching' and then again using gfxcardstatus to control the switching. In case it freezes while doing it too try and restart. Hopefully it will work. Best of luck.

Might as well add me to this list. Needed a motherboard replacement in March 2013 - $611 Canadian! Now, on November 24/13, I'm starting to see signs of the problem again - it starts with pink and green pixel-sized glitches on my desktop. I can't believe this is going to happen again. I don't have another $600 for the fix, and I am outside the 90 day repair warranty. What a tremendous dissappointment.

Let me just sum up the thoughts in this thread..APPLE WE WANT THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED NOW!!!! I can't get any work done on this $2,500.00 paperweight you call a computer. If you told me this computer would went to scrap in 2 yrs I would have never bought the thing. DO YOU REALIZE HOW EXPENSIVE YOUR COMPUTERS ARE??? You think we have money to throw away? I get it..you don't (want) your computers to last, you want (us) to keep buying new computers.

Quoting this comment because I think it captures much of the raw/viceral frustration I feel right now about the fact that:

    • a.)  if I connect my MBP to an external monitor (I use for my photo/video/design work), it will crash

    • b.) even if I spend $300+ to replace the logic board, the crashes *might* continue

    • c.) replacing the logic board will take several days (at minimum) to carry out

    • d.) my 2 year old, $2,300 MBP has a very serious (re: incapasitating) defect that cannot be with a software/firmware update.

    • e.) I may need to buy a brand new laptop/MBP bc my 2 year old, $2,300 MBP can not be fully fixed
