Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Guys...I have had a word with Apple Custom Support and after explaining the condition of our MBPs, the call was transferred to a Senior Advisor and turns out they're polite and willing to offer help.

I gave them the links to this discussion and similar relevant discussion in this forum. As per them, their next steps are to contact the Apple Engineering team and let them know about this kind of interim trouble of the logic board and consult with them in order to find a solution, while giving them the links to this discussion. In the meanwhile, the senior advisor said he'll go through this forum and see how many users are being affected with this issue and report the same to the Apple team.

Hopefully, Apple engineering team takes notice and comes up with some replacement program.

So, MBP back from Apple Care today after six days away.  This time they replaced the logic board again, plus both RAM chips, and somehting listed as Cover Cable Metal (cosmetic/mechanical damage).

Fingers crossed.  I do a video podcast tonight, so we will see if it all holds up...

    Hi,

I have the same problem here in France.

MBP early 2011 15 inches - AMD Radeon HD 6490M

    Like many of you :

    - At first : some freezes (restart required)

    - Then : blue lined freezes and sometimes black screens

    - Unable to restart : only a grey screen after the apple or sometimes a blue lined screen

    - No way to restart even after : resetting SMC, PRAM, apple hardware test, etc …

    - The only solution was to launch an internet recovery (do not hesitate to launch it 10 or 20 times …)  and to restore with a Time Machine backup

    - Now I’m using gfxCardStatus (Do it yourself when Apple don't) for a week on integrated card mode and it seems to work (even if on the first installation, my macbook froze again). Nevertheless, as a restart may switch to the corrupted card, I prefer let my mac open.

    - So it's like I have a 15 years old macbook, great...

As a graphic designer, my macbook is more than useful and I don’t want to pay for an expensive replacement of the logic board, particularly if it is useless (Cf. previous pages and testimonials about many unhelpful repairs).

Why should we pay for a problem Apple is responsible for ?

For sure, a replacement program could be really expensive for Apple, but letting so many users without any answer all over the world will be really more expensive later :

1/ We will stop buying Apple products as high prices no longer goes with high quality product and after-sale care

2/ We will go back on PC really reluctantly, but knowing that we’ll lose our laptop within 2 years, all of us would prefer to pay 500€ rather than 2000€ ….

3/ We will make future purchasers know about how Apple is « blind, deaf and dumb » to both product quality and customer satisfaction.

As an Apple fan (not for the social image but for the real daily utility), I can’t understand how Apple can let us without any solution, particularly when the problem isn’t due to a bad use but to a production latent defect.

In 2014, if no solutions are given, I’ll launch a website to collect complaints all over the world which would help us to initiate class actions.

Just hope Apple will ear us before that, this our only wish, no ?

I was just lucky since my fix was good for only 4 days, so I decided to bake the logic board and so far is been working perfectly for a week with temps 45 to 50 C before the temps were always 55 to 60 that was just browsing. I don't know how long will last but if I get 6 months (lets just hope) out of each bake the logic board will be well done in 2 years. I will keep you posted on any updates.

Aye.  Good stuff.  But I wanted to know if we'd see  anything interesting around the build dates as well as the purchase dates.  I  thought we might see a little more narrow range since two machines made  on the same day might be purchased days, weeks, or even months apart.

If  we can narrow in on some specific build weeks or narrow in even more on  specific assembly lines during specific build weeks, that would be very  interesting.

My notebook was repaired recently. I went to one of local service centers(as I know, this one is not authorized by apple), and they replaced my graphic chip, and gave me 3 month warranty. It cost me $250.

Do not know why, but graphical chip was defective:

    • it could not be overheated by extreme load(I have no games, or complex graphics on it).
    • it could not be broken mechanically(notebook was never fell or something).
    • there was no other possible violations of the rules of operation

So, I think fault was because of issue in Apple quality assurance.

If you are from Kyiv, I can recommend this service - company name is MacNit.

I have this same problem!... Too worried about my info, and this awful way of losing money 'cause I can't get my job at time.

Just hope somebody at apple notice this, and bring a decent answer.

This is a shame for a really expensive "top of the line" computer

Issue started just a few days ago over the weekend.  Same as everyone else.  Basically I have it hooked up to a 23" Cinema Display whenever I am at home.  At first, the screen started shifting, then it would lock up and the fans go crazy.  Suddenly started happening and then would lock up every few hours.

For now, changed all settings such that everything will bias towards Integrated mode.  So far it's been 3-4 days and I have no issues (also not using the external monitor anymore).

This was a BTO model with the matte high res screen:
