Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

That's exactly what I meant. And those reasons describe why we need a solution ASAP

Hi again, I've read in another forum that is very important that we all write to apple through here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

so they start taking into account the amount of cases.

I've just send a "feedback" message in that page. Hope someone reads it. I even sent them my serial number. I couldn't find a better way to report my case.

    Hi everyone,

it seems that I am facing the same problem since today.

If I force the MBP 15" (early 2011) to use the integrated graphics, everything is fine. But if I allow the dicrete one, it breaks down after a short period.

    Best regards

I followed their guidelines by offering constructive advice on how to get the dPGU working. They deleted that comment, too.

Here's my new attempt at advice: I think it's time to take this conversation away from Apple.

Shall we use the forum at http://www.mbp2011.com to discuss next steps?

I can create a new forum/site right now.

Anyone looking to get involved to find a solution outside of this/Apple's forums can contact to discuss what our next steps/best practices are here.

Well, Apple can't delete Posts sent by mail to people who subscribe to these discussions.

Until Apple reacts Appropriately to these Problems I have stopped all future purchases of Apple Hardware. I'm not playing the throw away and buy new game. Protesting with my Wallet.

AppleCares's method of sending me to a local gravis dealer to inspect the maschine, who in turn would have it lay around for at least two weeks just to check it out and take 60 euros for that is not acceptable. Looking at how it sometimes doesn't exhibit problems, and sometimes does, I am not even sure if they will experience these problems.

I wish my new ThinkPad could run OSX.

Now I have 2 working (G4/G5), and 2 dead macs sitting here - almost 10000 Euros in spent money.

    - Sent from my ThinkPad

On board with you. If Apple does not solve this issue I will also be protesting with my wallet. No more Apple products until they do the right thing.

Is there any way to know how many of us are facing this problem?

My question is to get a number at least in here, I assume there's a lot of other people around the world who doesn't even know this thread exists. But can we count the victims of this bad logic board telling their stories at least in this thread?

Starting from this point, should we ask a number of broken computers reported  to Apple to get a resonable expectation for a warranty extension?

I've seen a lot of cases here, and a lot more on other threads, how many more do they need to do something?

I suppose someone could go through this thread and a few others and count each individual name who replied that they are experiencing the same issue... that would probably give you a rough number.

the Apple Care Senior specialist I spoke to was Ambilikuttan from Bangalore. After mailing them all the details I never got a reply and couldn't follow it as I had to travel for work. With only franchises here in India it's difficult to keep explaining the problem to these guys on phone. The care center agrees that there is a problem but they can't do anything about the replacement even though they say that they have replaced some 2010 models showing similar problem. But yes maybe we should keep calling them and hope they take some step at least.
