Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

causes might have been found, as far as we can go. Solutions, gfxcardstatus for those who can boot that far.

A lot of users shared their mac info.. enough to validate they all come from the same year with the same problem. We did what we could. Listening to the silence of Apple isn't very proactive.

And worse the genius in the store diagnose the problem so badly that even apple might not have the proper number to mesure the problem. They replace logic board blindly, and a lot of custommrs don't even bother because they know it cost the price of a small laptop.

«My genius» wrote «could not reproduce the problem» because it didn't freeze in the starup menu and diagnostic screen.

Then it took me 40 tries to get it up and running again.

I don't necessarily thing it will help, but here is a link to [the thing that shall not be named] where you can enter your name on a list of people with similar problems.

Maybe with a url shortener, it won't get auto-deleted?

So I sent an email to Apple Radar, and they replied me asking for logs.

Please, go to https://bugreport.apple.com and fill a bug report.

I could login with my apple ID on chrome.

Now if you could list step by step what to enter in the forms so everyone can enter something coherent and not all over the place.

My early 2011 MBP has been dead for two weeks. Unable to boot at all. I am able to getinto single user mode but as soon as I exit the machine locks up. Out of desperation and fear of having a 2k paperweight I booted the machine into target disk mode and from my Mac Mini installed Maverickes. The install went smooth and with no problems. I was able to do some web surfing and the computer survived a reboot. I'm worried about doing anything on it, its been unstable.

This summer I payed Apple the $300 to replace the motherboard. 95 days after the fix it died again. Apple said beacause they use a 3rd party to do the replacement I would have to pay another $300 to get it fixed again. I truley hope they figure this out soon. My entire house is filled with Apple Producs, but I'm getting pretty comfortable with windows 8.1.    Aready passed on a few Apple TV for a Ruko 3.

WELL DONE! I do not have much time but I want to leave a word just to say that I really appreciate the efforts of the people here trying to find a solution. I think we are a few hundreds. Apple could take care of this problem seriously. A 2-3000+ dollars computer cannot just die after 2 years and be irreparable.

    @paradoxes

you are right. You dont buy a expensive mbp to just crash in 2 years.

    @fernando_lobos

I have done bug reports, feedback forms and all such thing. I am doing it since 2 months. I have gone to genius bar took appointments more than 10 times in a month with no result. I changed my HDD too.

So now we have to be proactive its like apple does not care. There is no statement from thier side. What are they scared of. thier stock going low. hmmmm if things are done at the right time you dont have to think about it.

    Thanks @paradoxes

you thought me a new way.

I guess all our frustration is arising because we dont have a solution. Apple please do something soon before it becomes a big news.

Well seems that all we can do is keep complaining.

I've sent messages everywhere too, still don't have a better answer than "change your logic board" for an expensive price and knowing -as other users report- that it's going to give problems soon.

In the next few days I'll have an answer from a authorized service, the second one as I said before, really hope this time get a better response from them, I've already spent $100 in 2 services to get a better answer, I'm not gonna spend more money just to get solution that's not coming.

It's hard for me to write in english (not my native language) so it gets harder for me keeping sending messages to apple, specially if all I got is silence.

    - Petition signed.

    - Bug Report sent.

    - Facebook page liked.

I would like to be answered about one thing : How many times do you have to go to the Apple Store and get your logic board changed before they actually take it the professional way.

People just want a MacBookPro so they can work and avoid loosing business. They don't care if it's a 2011 or a 2013.

So you know, in Paris you can't go to an Apple Store anymore, Genuis Bars do not have any room left in their calendar. There is stil a few certified third part stores but they need 2 to 3 weeks for a simple diagnostic and they will charge you for that.

    A word about gfxCardStatus :
This software (stop me when I'm wrong) is just a way to KNOW what GPU is used. It DOES NOT prevent the system to switch between them and crash.
IMO, tweaking and sharpening the system in order to "kind of" make it work, is not a long term solution. And for what I've experienced and read right here, it's a matter of days before the system laughs at you and does not boot anymore.

Imagine one of your car tire is flat.

If you're in the middle of the interstate, you drive to the safe line. But would you continue your trip as if nothing ? Oh, so you stay under 30mph, that ok I guess.
