Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

It would seem the only fix is to use the same non discrete graphics used the newer MBPs. Either that or replace all the effected computers. replace the cards with others that have design flaw us NOT a solution. Or they could do nothing and  have us just buy new MBPs, which seems to be there plan...

Sorry for the typos as I can't start my 2011 MacBook Pro and have to use a cell phone.

I've pretty much given up on my macbook and have bought another computer.  But I still search for information and found this article about the gfxCardStatus we've all been using.   The writer for ZDNet, David Morgenster, is experiencing a failing video card and wrote about using gfxCardStatus to fix it.

Little utility rescues a MacBook Pro with failing video

He referenced someone's blog who is also experiencing the issue.  He had a fix I'd love to try, but since my mac is DONE maybe you will all benefit from it. (And no... I'm not bitter at all .)

Maybe someone could write him and tell him about all of us.  Maybe he can help make something happen.

    Happy Holidays!

It's not a fix but only a workaround.

Ok, it's positive of course you can use it again to get jobs done, backup your data or whatever.

Surely if it is the only computer one has.

Hopefully only to be used untill Apple comes with solution for it.

However, it cripples graphics performance, which is why many users buy there macbook pro probably for.

Still leaving it stuck with a bad discrete GPU.

kudos to Apple for starting this decade with worst product and not taking the responsibility.

I think the apple products are now showing signs of slow death. I have seen all the images posted so far on my(apple's) MacBook Pro from past 10 days. Can these apple FDAs have the guts to face the customers now? I feel cheated. In a country like India, Rs. 35,000 is a fortune.

Jumping into the discussion here and chiming in as another MBP user with the same symptoms and freezes as many others here. The Apple employee ran some diaglostics and had me leave it for overnight testing. They determined that it needed to be repaired and offered a flat rate of $310 plus tax, although they said they couldn't pinpoint what the issue was with the tests.  A couple days later, it's apparently fixed after they replaced the logic board.  Based on the 2000+ comments on this thread, it appears this is a pretty widespread issue. It sure would be nice to be reimbursed for what appears to be an obvious defect affecting many users between the 2 and 3-year life on their MBPs.

So, Apple is in approach of this topic and doesn't know how to solve the problem. On a previous page three posts were "Edited by the host" (also mine). The only thing they know, is that they are in big troubles. Probably so big that whole company is at a stake. I am guessing that many people wanted this version of unibody MBP coz of intel i7 quad  processor and many of them are designers, musicians etc, that were not able to work, not playing games. Apple now has many problems and any replacement programe would be a mouthful case for a company. From my experiences the fix is changing the gpu with lead solder and good cooling the machine. In a replacement program, apple should be fair enough to replace/ repair machines also to that people that made repair in a professional repair shops.

The fix would be a non discrete gfx card replacement. Also apple us NOT in big trouble.they can fudge the number to make it appear that it's only a small group of user, if Apple does go that route and screw over the actual large number of affected users, it will cost them in the long run. But I fear not short of forcing Apple's hand will solve this. Despite the "ignorance" of this issue by your local Apple tech the company is very much aware if this issue given how diligent the moderator here censors our posts expressing our anger.

MacBook Pro 15" HD 6750m, early 2011. The GPU failed on me only one and a half year after the purchase.

This machine cost me 3500$ here, and they are asking me 1200$ to "repair" it.

I have the same problem with my MBP 15" Early 2011.  I am from Seattle, WA USA.  Everything seems to be OK if I use gfxCardStatus and use the integrated card only.

We should all invade the Cupertino HQ.

Same problem here, green tint on startup screen and blue screen with vertical lines appear on my early 2011 15" MBP whenever I try to safe boot.

This has happened in September 2012 and I have paid to get the logic board replaced. I did not expect the same issue to occur again after 15 months. I'm still a college student who doesn't have an income, now I'm struggling between getting it repaired (again) and buying a brand new laptop.

Apple needs to do something because we did not purchase a premium product and expect such results. :|
