Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Another victim right here (

My 15" early 2011 macbook pro was working perfectly untill last month. Basicly excatly the same problem listed on this list. After 2 weeks of battling with it I finally gave up and visited the genius bar and changed a logic board. And 4500HKD later I got it back. It was working fine for about 3 days then i had a first glich on my screen. Not long after that, the same problem has all come back to me. it's already the 8th shutdown today ((((((

The genius told me they will keep my old logic board for 3 month, and if the new one does not work I'll have the option of replacing another new one or get my old one back and they will refund me with the money.

So I am just wondering what should I do now? As I replaced my logic board before I came accross this Discussion forum therefor I have not tried turning off graphics switching. If that really work I could get back my money and still have my computer back and working.

Option 1 ) get back my original logic board and ask for a refund and try turning off graphics switching and see if it work?

Option 2) replace another new logic board and hope the same problem won't come back and haunt me

    Any tip will be great

    Thanks

Here is what it looks like after just 3 days of replacing a "new logic board"

Actually any repair shop can do. Just make sure you tell them that its a GPU problem and it needs to be resoldered or they will go the path of swapping motherboard. Make sure that your problem is the same here by comparing with the posted pictures here.

You can try Laptop GH in Funan or some of those shops in Sim Lim. Check that they have a proper BGA soldering station.

My son took his early-2011 15" MBP to Apple and asked their advice about fixing the GPU.

They won't look at it unless he pays them $190.

After many months living with the Intel HD 3000, my MacBook Pro doesn't boot anymore. When I turn it on, I see red horizontal lines, then a grey screen and it gets very hot while the fans spin ever faster.

    Seriously, this is insane!

Dear Anonymous Apple Employee That Relentlesly And Rapidly Edits Everyone's Posts:

How about you do something actually useful and fix badly designed, overpriced laptops instead of our messages?

    Thanks.

    @rdbrwn

They said it was a GPU issue and they had to replace the GPU.

    @Jackel83

I went to http://www.therepairhospital.com/index.htm @ The ARC. Cost me around S$370 and took 2-3 weeks to repair.

The only thing we can and should do if this is not going to be resolved by Apple is to put our money where our mouth is.

Meaning: STOP buying Apple products and spread the word.

    Really.

I know it requires courage but the alternative seems to be to suffer their narcissistic squeeze.

I know this was the last thing I bought from Apple.

So your options are getting your old board back and refund for the repair or continued swapping of the logic board. Since we know swapping the board won't permanently solve the problem refund would send you on your way as if to say "we've done all we can do enjoy your 2.5 yrs old, 2500.00 piece of crap" are you serious! That's solving your problem. Seriously Apple? Okay we clearly see what u think of your customers.

I just bought a Macbook Air because I really need a propperly working machine for work. As soon as an "exchange/repair extension program" is launched by apple, I'm going to sell my Macbook Pro 2011 and won't buy any of those expensive bricks ever again. It's really frustrating that such a wealthy company isn't even able to talk to us users... shame on apple.

I'm with you CharlesLux. I bought a macbook air because I had to have something for work. And as soon as Apple owns up to this problem I will take my MBP in for repair and then sell it. At least if my new MBA has a defect like this in the future I am only out 1500 instead of 2500

    Guys,

Can you tell me again how to disable the AMD drivers? It's impossible to locate a single helpful post in a thread over 2000 long... I can boot in single mode, so I'd like to try to boot it to the GUI to make a backup of my latest work to continue in another laptop.

Same model, same issue. Early 2011 Macbook Pro 2.0 gHz i7 started going crazy on me about mid-2013 with significant heating issues and a few months later finally started crashing when playing high quality video, displaying certain websites, or flowing to an external monitor (I'm not savvy enough to say for certain, but I'm fairly sure that this is when the graphics card switch is taking place?). Result ranges from crashing, to going to sleep and failing to restart, to restarting with a green apple logo with green lines on the screen and then proceeding to a solid blue screen. It can take 10 restarts or more to get it going again, and that is unreasonable, I've got to fix it or replace it.

When I bought it, it was quite overpowered for my rather pedestrian purposes and, to say the least, I'm not pleased to hear from the apple Genuises that less than 3 years since the purchase of a $2000 workhorse, I might as well Old Yeller it and buy a brand new machine. What's worse is that there appears to be little or no support for a problem so common that third party repair shops have become expert at fixing logic boards and that, when desribed to the Geniuses at Apple, they just look at each other knowingly before telling me I'm out of luck.

I get that I took a risk not getting Apple Care, and I accept that, but this seems to be a problem on a large scale affecting a very particular set of model users. That those users now find themselves in such a crummy situation without any kind of support is extremely dissapointing.
