Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

This is exactly why apple will not do anything about this issue they know Apple users will continue to by their stuff no matter how bad the quality. It's your type that make it difficult for us who demand to get what we pay for.

I didn't say I was going to bend over and accept it. Just that I'm hopeful they will do the right thing and that I still prefer them over any other options. If they don't do the right thing I'm willing to see if we can get a class action going in the US.

"I'm willing to see if we can get a class action going in the US."

"Willing to see", but not willing to initiate it?  Many people have threatened to do the same as you have.  Regardless, there is another method to get your situation quickly but, I'm waiting to see what you're waiting to see.

Starting to wish I never posted anything here. Just wanted to add another voice to the thread of people suffering with this issue. Hope we get a resolution soon. Not "threatening" anyone. And not thrilled to be called "your type" either. Issue reported. Over and out.

I can understand that alot of people here is upset and frustrated (I'm one of them) but there is no need to be disrespectful towards each other. It's better to channel that negative energy in the right direction (a certain company).

    We need to stand united!

Here is another place to complain.

A successful petition will help Apple preserve its reputation and its customer satisfaction.

Well, what can I say except that what has been said before?

You all surely now expect me to say that my 2011 MacBook Pro is having some issues with the Discrete Graphics.

And indeed I came here to do so.

The problems started to arise at the end of November, when Photoshop/Illustrator would suddenly crash after an hour or two of hard graft, slowly but surely that time decreased and now it's pretty musch crashing in anticipation for the moment when I hover over the Photoshop button.

    Slightly more detailed specs:

MacBookPro8,2 with an AMD Radeon HD 6490M.

My MPB 17" started freezing in late December '13, while I was on vacation back in Europe. The Apple store suggested to run HD diagnostic and repair permissions, which didn't change anything. Working in Western Africa, where it is not easy to replace/ repair a MBP, and not being able to afford loosing data/ time when back at work, I bought a new MBP (15" obviously) the day before leaving Europe, as a 'spare' machine (nothing compares to a 17" MBP, the early 2011 one is my 3rd), a 2000 Euro investment! I depend on and use my MBP and other Apple products (iPhone 4/5, iPad 4) every day, sometimes under harsh conditions, and am prepared to pay for it, but Apple should also be prepared to keep us happy, especially if it is a flaw that concerns so many of us.

This thread has now passed 200,000 views. I can't imagine anyone seeing this problem as isolated to just a few users and "bad luck".

I just think you have to be slightly ******** to post here and sat yeah Apple sold us a piece of crap but I like them and willing to stand behind them in hope that they do the right thing. If they were willing to do the right thing they wouldn't have sold us this issue in the first place. Apple is not going to do the right thing, why should they when most here will continue to support the company. None of you will leave Apple, so just take it and quit complaining...

Just adding to the neverending list. My early 2011 17" Macbook Pro began acting eratically on the 26th of December. Same symptoms as everyone else is describing, rendering it more or less useless. Can't believe Apple hasn't officially responded to this widespread issue yet.

I don't believe Apple knew 2-3 years ago that this was going to happen, but can still hope that they will take care of the issue at this point.

Furthermore I do think Apple's products are superior in most things, such as OS, design and general feeling. But it doesn't mean I'm going to "just take it" when the product failed because of a manufacturing failure, especially not when it cost between $700-1300 to fix it.

Just another one hoping Apple will do the thing!

Hi Carl, Are you a host here? I feel bad about posting about filing suits. Not that I'm unwilling to make the effort but not sure it's the right path at this point. I've not participated much in these forums and this discussion has given me the wrong idea about their purpose. If you are a host and you have the power to delete, I would love it if all but my first post were removed. I do want to add my issue to the thread, just not the bad attitude I had yesterday. I feel silly for letting myself get riled up. It's been a tough week trying to finish a project on a backup computer whilst doing multiple clean installs on my MacBook to rule out software issues. I'm a bit worn out and frayed at the edges. Thanks for your help if you're able.
