Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I'm having the MLB issue on my refurbished early-2011 MBP 8,2.  I was offered a flat-rate replacement of $310.00 at the local Apple Store.

I don't blame you,  I wish I had the $$$ to get a different machine.

Same problem here, I have a 2011 macBook Pro, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6770M.. I was working on Maya (3D Software) when the system freezed with a black screen. After reboot the computer has freezed in a blank screen, without be able to login... After try to restart from USB, blue screen (with black horizontal stripes)...

I have to use the hardware dignostic tool to keep the mac working. But the diagnose don't detect any problem on hardware...

Now I can't let the AMD working, I have to force using only the integrated graphics card.

    Isn't that a recall issue?

"...Sometimes a little dotty line instead of the cursor". I have the exact same thing happening sporadically along with all of the other issues.

I am having the exact same problem on my MBP 17 2.2 i7 from 2011 with 6750M card and running 10.9.1.

I really hope Apple will acknowledge this problem and start some kind of exchange program or something. This just isn't right!

Well, because our 15" Early 2011 MBP was bought as a refurb machine in April 2012, it qualified for a new logic board. So it is now working again, but it is still getting very hot in the GPU department, so I don't believe it wll last long.

Strange behaviour since last December during intense grapics tasks; last week I've experienced a (scary) forced reboot: laptop freezed, the screen slowly became opaque from top to bottom with a severe error message in the middle.

I suspect that these are the initial symptoms of the same issue.

Same thing happened to me on two Macbooks... at least one of them was one month before the end of the warranty. Got it replaced for free. It is now MUCH MUCH cooler than before and the battery lasts much longer.

The other Macbook was older and just out of warranty by one month when it first started crashing last year. It was my first Apple Laptop computer, and being a "pro" I thought it maybe ran hot because it was a "pro" computer. It gets so hot you can't touch the power area sometimes. Ran hot since day one. Almost usless to use now... just sits in a cupboard. Such a waste.

Yes, Apple needs to do something about this. Hopefully all the news stories will prompt some action.

The display on my 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz Intel 7, late-2010 running 10.9) is starting to become pixelated. It looks like a garble of text or images, including the background images. I don't know if I can find start-up discs to run AHT, since apparently that partition is lost during updates to OSX. Help appreciated!

Below is a screen capture of what is happening.

This is "repost" from my experience. My display looks different than the stories fo the others, but I wonder if I'm having the same problem.

To have an idea what could be normal, which top temperatures do you have now for CPU and GPU?.

    Thanks

I forgot to add, I did find the original start-up disks and ran the AHT. No issues were reported. I am unable to guess the temps, because I got rid of SMC fan control some time ago. Sorry.

I don't have answers, but  I'd also like to chime in that my Early 2011 Antiglare macbook pro 2.2 ghz i7/6750m failed as well, about 8 or 9 months ago. It's dissapointing, I hope apple will addres it, because I've always known them as a company to stand behind their products, especially if they are sytematically failing soon after warranties expire. I never abused it, never ran graphics intensive games or programs, unless you think minecraft qualfies

My early 2011 MBP 15" started giving me the blue screen when taxing the discrete graphics about four months ago.

    *sigh* should have bought Applecare.

    OR

Apple could do the right thing and replace the logic boards for those affected.
