Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I have the same model, graphics card issue.  I had to have AppleCare replace the logic board.  Nothing the user can do.

I have had almost similar issues for some issues with my mac happening for a month or so. The last time I gave it to Service Center, they said the issue is because I am not using compatible RAM (and too much of it - 16GB). This was sent to service center after cleaning the machine (removing all unnecessary cache, cookies etc), re-installing the OS despite Apple apparently knowing about this problem (if I go through this thread it seems Apple has replaced Logic Boards for lots of machines under AppleCare). However, the service center returned it and the machine worked for a couple of days and again... caput!! No booting, only gray screen.

I sent it again last week and it took them 3 days to diagnose (to say that they can't find any fault) and I am told today that they have now asked for a replacement of Logic Board. We will see if the issue gets fixed with this replacement. Did I tell you that the nearest Apple Service Center is ~300kms from where I leave?

FWIW, my machine was under Apple Care so they are replacing everything free of cost.

One other note: APPLE THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO ALLOW US TO CHANGE CODE IN THE OS OR SYSTEM FIRMWARE TO COMPLETLY SHUTOFF THE DISCRETE CARD ALLOWING US TO WORK ON INTEGRATED ONLY!!!

This is only an ugly workaround and will not help the majority of people at all, since you cannot connect any external display devices to it anymore.

After some email contact and two phone calls with an Executive Relations in Cork, Ireland, Apple has offered to switch my logic board for free. I'm curious if it's going to solve the problem, but it's a major leap in the right direction for me. I will go hand the machine in next Friday, I will come back to you as soon as I know if it solved anything.

It's strange that speaking with Executive Relations worked so well for me but many others (especially from the US) don't get anything via this way. It might be that I'm from Europe (The Netherlands) and consumer protection is a little better here...

I have exactly the same problem. But my Macbook Pro is a late 2011. because of this problem I replaced my harddisk but by replacing the harddisk the problem was not solved (only fasterbecause it was a SSD :-) Maybe it's individual because it's not a early 2011. But I had to let Apple know about this. Sorry for my English, I'm from Holland

We have seen late 2011 Pros with the same issue. I've got one and I had to replace the logic board so it is not an early isolated problem but more related to the AMD 6000 series GPU.

    jobberns82,

I've a late 2011 model, as well, and I had to have my logic board replaced because of the faulty GPU. Just got it back about 11 days ago now. Seems to be OK for the moment but I'm thinking that the whole thing could go up in flames at any time.

    Same here.

The glitches as posted before (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24539500#24539500) are showing on my MB Pro. It would be adorning if Apple fixed this for all the damaged MB Pro's, but... They probably won't (?)

I have another problem with graphics. Sometimes, when my Macbook is waking up from sleep I have a black Menu-Bar at the top

The only solution for me is to boot up again.

    Is this the same issue?

No, but it is a problem - likely related to OS X. If I were you I would make a 'fresh' installation.

Is this caused by heat? If so, it's users fault. Not apple's.

Same here. I have the same model Core i7 Radeon HD 6750M 15' MBP late 2011. It broke 15 months after purchase, repair costs €700 (over $1000), so I got a MacBook Air instead though I was not planning to change that soon.

Still, this is hardware failure, and I would expect Apple to do something about it. Especilly since they setup a plan for iMac with same graphics card (another proof of build defect).
