Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

They keep censoring people trying to get organized to do something about their ****** manufacturing. You sure know how to charge a pretty penny, Apple...

Well I've used a USB cooler since day 1 with my macbook pro and didn't avoid the temperatures of the GPU get to 90 deegres C and fail after 2 years of use. So you are wrong in your statement.

    Ciu5781,

I disagree with your entire post. At every new product launch the leadership of Apple  from Steve Jobs to Tim Cook have touted their products as premium whend compared to Dell, Acer, IBM etc. It shows in the engineering of the Uni-Body of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The feel of a premium device is evident even in the simplicity of the lighted keyboard of an Apple. When I compared Apple's idea of the lighted keyboard on my 2011 MBP to the lighted option on the IBM T42 made in 2011. You can see the level of egineering detail that's available only from Apple. IBM only offered an LED pop up light on their lcd screen which only illuminates the keybard when the lid is half way open, when fully opened the LED light barely illumins the function keys. I still maintain and I'm sure that most everyone else would agree that an Apple MBP is a premium laptop when compared to their contemporaries. We just happen to expect a certain level of quality than what is offered by Dell, Acer, and IBM. I'd still buy another Apple product evan after my experience with my 2011 MBP. If money wasn't an issue I'd just go out and buy the current model MBP. Like others here that probably isn't a realistic option. Sure Apples are manufactured in China, but I would never buy the Shuanghaun CEO (which is a Chinese knock off of the BMW x5) and claim I own a BMW x5. I would buy the acutal BMW x5. My question to you is do you actually own an Apple product? If so why did you buy it? Did you buy it just so you could say you have one? Or did you expect a premium product for the premium price?

I have overheating problems too, sorted them out by putting big rubber feat under my MBP. Not the most elegant solution but at least it works now!

    ronnyb7,

The admins just deleted my reply to your post. I can't even suggest googling the petition site either. Apparently the Apple Support Community Terms of Use supercedes my first amendment rights here in the U.S.

All this censorship keeps surprising me negatively and starts to show me and make me understand what this brand its all about, It reminds me of a regime that reigned over Europe in the beginning of the 40's and liberty of expression wasn't alwed, we all know why, and the end of that story didn't have an happy end. If they keep censoring it just proves that there is a real problem with these machines and they don't want to assume it.

First Amendment doesn't protect you here.

It protects you if you set up your own newspaper (or blog).

I found this thanks to mbp2011.com

Is this problem with graphics responsible for occasional freezes and gray screens on the late 2011 17" as well?

My MacBookPro8,3 is identified as "late 2011" and I'm not sure what's up with it.

It appears to be, lots of people with late 2011 MBP, 15" and 17", face the same issues (including me)

Yes, at least 2 large discussions involving this. I wrote Apple again today, I think the petition is not growing large enough. I tried to write CNET to write an article about this and it apparently went ignored, I think I will contact them again and maybe get some light shined on this petition. I don't know what else to do!

    ankhank,

You're completely wrong. Trying to stay on topic I have the right to voice my opinoin where ever and when ever I want. I'm voicing my opinion with regard to the problems with my MBP, much the same as others here hoping Apple will correct what is obviously a manufacturing or design problem

By the way the full text of Article I is:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Please notice the word "or", and also please lookup the word abridging.

OSX start perfect, can access throught network, but display completely black (no apple logo, no gray screen)

In system info no discrete graphics.

Trying to reset SMC, PRAM. Not helped.

Any word on late-2011 Intel based Macs being impacted? I have a MBP with Intel HD Graphics 3000. One New Years Eve, I closed my computer and went out. I woke up the next day and it would not restart, and had to get the logic board replaced. Is this a similar issue?

All this censorship just proves that Apple it is afraid of this petition and it can make a change!
