Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    It's true!

Same counts for the facebook group! My posts referring to it get deleted as well.

    I think it's a good sign:)

It's simply the blog policy. It think it doesn't mean a thing.

We all have to keep raising the issue everywhere we can.

    Chris,

Unfortunately this site "Apple Support Community" is not a petition site. According to the Administrators of this site they define the use of this site for the following.

These forums are intended for technical questions that can be answered by the community.

The community as a whole have answered and I'm sure most would agree that Apple has failed to adequately address the problems with our 2011 MBP's.

YES!!! That's my thought too. They are definitely trying to keep us silent but it won't work!

There are many reports of late 2011 macbook pro which have both an AMD/ATI gpu and the intel 3000.

I haven't see any report of macbook (which only has the intel 3000)

It shows in the engineering of the Uni-Body of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The feel of a premium device is evident even in the simplicity of the lighted keyboard of an Apple. When I compared Apple's idea of the lighted keyboard on my 2011 MBP to the lighted option on the IBM T42 made in 2011. You can see the level of egineering detail that's available only from Apple. IBM only offered an LED pop up light on their lcd screen which only illuminates the keybard when the lid is half way open, when fully opened the LED light barely illumins the function keys. I still maintain and I'm sure that most everyone else would agree that an Apple MBP is a premium laptop when compared to their contemporaries.

Whether you consider it as premium or not Apple never said their computer comes with premium durability. It's assembled with parts made in china. Every machine dies when the lifespan of those parts end. The enclosure is just a cosmetic thing. Even if the enclosure is premium the end of the lifetime of the parts comes equally.

gfxCardStatus selection of 'Integrated Only' does not persist through a reboot.

I just moved all AMD/ATI extentions in /System/Library/Extensions to a new directory:

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD2400Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD2600Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD3800Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD4600Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD4800Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD5000Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD6000Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMD7000Controller.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDFramebuffer.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonVADriver.bundle

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX3000.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX4000.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX4000GLDriver.bundle

    /System/Library/Extensions/AMDSupport.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin

    /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle

    /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle

My new directory name is:     /System/Library/Extensions (disabled)

This has helped since I can now still use my computer until Apple provides a solution.

I've got the same problem for MBP 17 with Radeon. Service is aking me for repair nearly 1000 USD.

No more Apple any more in my house! I'm tired of numerous defects for overpriced products. The support is awful!

I have not had this issue yet. Has anyone with the anti-glare (non-glass) screen had this issue?

Yep. We're not bloggers -here- though.  Apple is the blogger, here.

If blog owners didn't have the ability to moderate comments, this would be 99 percent spam.

Same for you on your own blog.

    Charlie Stross at http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2008/06/moderation-policy.html explains:

Your freedom of speech does not compel me to publish your words

I'd keep track of your own posts that disappear, though -- if this does come 'round eventually to a repair program, it'd be good to be able to show when your problem appeared.

Better, though, to take it to an Apple store and get on record what exactly you complained about and when.

Apple has a history of eventually doing the right thing, usually years after they could have, often because of a class action lawsuit.  It's how they do business.

Just my opinion, and only for however long the Apple moderators tolerate its appearance here.

I have the anti-glare and based on informations I've been reading since september 2013:

    1) Replacing the logic board might fix the issue, it depends if you get lucky with the board and your usage of the computer I guess. A lot of people have been through many logic board changes so we can assume that they all have the same weaknesses and are prone to fail at any moment.

    2) baking the board, reflowing the GPU or reballing the GPU. The best fix is to replace the GPU with a new one properly soldered. Reballing using the same GPU might fail down the road due to heat stress though it's still the best solution available at the moment. Baking is dangerous to the board and reflowing is a temporary solution.

    3) That's what I've been doing for 4 months. It *****. (I work in graphic design, video & photography)

    4) Not that I know of. Putting pressure on Apple to extend the warranty like they did for the 2008 macbook pro models with Nvidia GPU and the IMAC with the AMD/ATI GPU (same one as our macbook pros).

I'm subscribed to the discussion and get all the post by email. If there is spam it is automatically filtered before the moderation.

    - I never ever saw a spam post, but I've seen hundreds of user comment disapear -even useful ones, because they mentionned things "that should not be mentionned" :/
