Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Also have this exact same issue. As long as I keep the integrated card on it functions fine, the moment I switch, poof. Screen glitches and screen goes black. Very annoying, because it seems to always wake up and boot from the discrete unit, which I now have to do a couple of times because it's so broken.

I have the same problem, I also have a 2011 15" MBP, and the grapics also play crazy, sometimes so hard that I can't read.

Turns out many non official service centers in my country (Indonesia) acknowledges that the 2011 batches of MacBook Pro 15" has faulty VGA, but no free replacement from official service centers as Apple don't recognize the defect. The official service center quoted me for a logic board replacement for $790 (and with the poor exchange rate, it costs almost 50% of monthly salary of a medium-enterprise-manager). Totally disappointed now.

    I'm from Italy,

yesterday same problem reported in the forum, really annoying, I am forced to use only the integrated card if I use the discrete card after a couple of minutes the computer freezes and I have to forced restart

The Apple Authorized Service Provider just now told me that the early 2011 MBP logic board not in stock anymore at the moment and they can't even estimate when the logic board will be in stock again.

Now they don't have any idea how to get my early 2011 MBP fixed.

    It's just....great....

    Well done, Apple!

Woah! That is a very serious, very bad development!

Do you know if the stock-shortage is worldwide or country specific?!?! Which country are you from?

I was literally going to return my MBP today after finally saving up enough over-time to go a few days without a computer (no computer, no $$).

"Woah! That is a very serious, very bad development!"

Actually, if this is true, its the best possible development.  It would mean that the 'refurbishing of used/non-functioning logic boards choo-choo train' is over, and Apple must now come up with either new boards or swap entire systems for people, or some type of solution.  It is one thing for Apple to say they will not service out-of-warranty 2011 Macbook Pros for free; it would be quite another to disclose that they are categorially non-serviceable.  That would be a 'reputation-hit' that would freak-out higher management.

I would wager that is if this is true, it means that a 'perma-solution' is at hand.

Edited** Not too mention what will they say to Applecare-covered people like me, for whom they are legally obligated to repair/replace the equipment in question.?

I know my logic board (late November swap) is new, not a refurb; a fact which surprised even the tech who did the work.

Same problem as of 1/16/2014, late-2011 15" MBP.  Circumventing it with the gfxCardStats for now.  Hope to squeeze more time out of this until Apple decides to address this problem in the coming months.  Luckily I don't depend on the GPU all that much, but it doesn't mean i'm not peeved.

even my Mac has the same problem

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011

Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory 10 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (original 4GB)

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

    Software OS X 10.9.1

    serial: c02fd6n4df91

The screen goes crazy, lines appear or I move the screen, and sometimes as the monitor goes to sleep, will not turn back ... more a disaster!!

apple support told me to change the graphics card (probably the problem is due to this) cost me € 400! crazy

How can the system be manipulated that Intel 3000 is permanently running? On my MACBOOK is the  AMD 6490 also damaged.

I wonder if Apple click that their behaviour in situations such as this (including moderating comments out of existance and ignoring a clear issue in the face of compelling evidence) is causing customer dissatisfaction: http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/21/forrester-consumer-experience-survey-2014/
