Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Add me to the list of people who have a broken Macbook Pro 2011 with the 6490M.

It happened very quickly in my case. Saw the graphical glitch (split screen with a black bar down the middle), rebooted and stayed on the grey screen. I took it to the Apple store in Barcelona last week and got the same response as most, although he did admit he had seen the problem a couple of times, although it would cost me roughly €500 to fix.

This is my third mac and will be my last if Apple don't offer a recall. It is unacceptable to pay for a repair when it is quite obviously a factory defect.

Same issue here with my Macbook Pro Late 2011 in Singapore. Sent it to A.Lab here and after their diagnostic, confirmed it is the GPU faulty and required a Logicboard replacement at a staggering SGD$1400 which is almost 3/4 the price of a new Macbook Pro 13 Retina. I am not spending that kind of money on a repair that is only guaranteed for 90 days.

Apple deny any knowledge of this widespread issue and refused to cover the repair since I do not have Applecare.

Keeping my finger crossed for a recall even though I guess it is their strategy to wait until all the AppleCare of this faulty batch of macbook pro expires.

    Just for the record...

    Here's another 17" MBP Late 2011 with AMD 6770m.

First just distortions, freezing and shift. Then one day later it stopped booting completely.

One month beyond warranty. Apple quoted C$500+ to replace the logic board. :-(

Not a great strategy if you are a customer (or shareholder). They did repair 2010 MBPS with the same issue but it was not called a recall. They restricted the repairs to machines less than 3 years old. Mine's 2 months off that. If they wait for the Applecare to expire and do the same thing they will save a huge amount of money. Might not be the smartest move though as the saving will be less than the loss of customers not buying new MBs will cause.

OK, I got a board swap and I've avoided using a second monitor. As an experiment I opened Poser 8 and started to render a scene (one character, hi res textures). The fans started blowing and this appeared on the screen:

Well that's interesting. Previously I can't recall Poser ever triggering the fans or this error occurring, but I also never tried to render that particular character with that texmap before (and other test renders earlier that evening went off without a hitch).

Just as a curious note regarding something discussed earlier in these posts.  My early 2011 15" MBP has not gone out yet.  A few signs that make me wonder if we soon are headed there, but?  I have Istat monitor loaded on my unit.  Today I purchased a coolmaster x-lite cooling base and put it under my mbp.  After having done this I have noticed the temps of both the cpu and the gpu have shown a marked decrease.  In fact I have yet to go over 98 degrees F. with the cpu and 91 degrees F with the gpu.  Now I have not been doing anything heavy with the unit but everything is running very cool.  Even the palm rests that after a while online begin to feel warm are now very cool to the touch.  I realize this is not a fix for a bad logic board design but it certainly could add some life to our units if we can keep them cooler.  So that is my experience with having used this for today.  Thought it was note worthy.

yassine974 Can you give us more details about your incident . Please give us full synthesis of your macbook pro ( system caracteristics, hardware upgrades you have done , operating system that you use etc. ) and the usage you make on daily basis . As I said , I also use my macbook on clamshell mode and always connected to an Apple LED Cinema Dsplay , but I have not any serious problems yet ...

@missionarymac I had my machine on cooling pads at home and at the office from day 1 in Feb. of 2011.

It definitely kept the unit cooler even performing ordinary tasks -- both externally to the touch and considering the internal temperature readings.

However - mine failed last week just like everyone elses. Perhaps it made the inevitable happen a tiny bit later than some but it would appear that this is inevitable for a large percentage of computers shipped.
