Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Don't know about you... but this seems like a nice ( event better ) replacment for a defect Apple products http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m3800-workstation/pd . I got my logic borad replaced but I'm paranoid this will happen again. I'm thinking to sell MBP and buy a dell this time.

we are still at the starting point ... after I wrote they called me to get more information, but I have solved the problem! 99% of the problem is the overheating of the GPU and CPU as you can see from the pictures. just use a graphics program (Photoshop or Final Cut X) your computer is overheating and the screen turns blue or black, or moves a few inches. I have a MBP unusable ... I have to use a normal PC ... apple is getting ridiculous and not purely commercial thinking more about the individual user ...

I'm getting around the problem as best I can by doing my photo editing (part of my job) in Preview instead of Aperture - my 2011 MBP will no longer run Aperture and I don't want to pay for a 'band-aid' repair. I might get out my ancient iMac DVSE in order to maintain my web site using Dreamweaver, my 2011 MBP will no longer run Dreamweaver.

I'm looking forward to hearing about new record high profits from Apple this year.

Just got my MacBook Pro repaired today. They replaced the whole logic board for 650€, labour and VAT included (authorized repair shop in Genoa, Italy). I've just received the thing back and I'm re-cloning the disks, I'll keep it under observation in the next days. I'm crossing fingers hoping that the replaced logic board is from a different batch than the original one.

has failed for the third time the logic board in my macbook pro early 2011 2.0GHz quad-core i7.

the last replacement was in January, 2014, a new fault today and brought in replacement assistance.

What are you going to do Apple?

Not a thing. They are not equipped to handle board-level repairs and were they to admit to the defect, that's what it would take to properly fix the problem.

I've only had my logic board replaced once, but I'm filled with anxiety that it will take more than a logic board replacement to actually fix the issue. I'm lucky in that I have over a year of AppleCare remaining. I would advise those who are looking at paying for a logic board replaced to reconsider and to have a newly reballed new GPU installed. Much less expensive and it seems to be a permanent 'fix'.

    @refus68

Isn't it the general concensus that after three failed repairs that they tend to offer a new rMBP?

I brought my early 2011 MBP 2.2/8GB/1GB-VRAM to the store today for a flat rate repair. I'll be honest in saying I hope it fails repeatedly and within a very short time span. If people are reporting new rMBPs being put on the table I'm all in. I fully intend to stress test the GPU every night and schedule a shutdown to let it cool before I wake up. In my opinion, while not a fix per se, I monetarily come out ahead that way.

As an update, I sent in my MBP yesterday, the 24th of April, early in the morning. It was shipped overnight to the repair depot and was received early morning on the 25th of February. (I've been monitoring the repair status pretty insanely out of pure interest). This morning it had said they were diagnosing the problem. Just a few minutes ago it updated and said the repair was in progress.

Early 2011 15 inch MBP with AMD Radeon HD 6750M just went on me today.  Had the initial lines and now repeated blue screens.

Incredibly disappointed with Apple on this. Near enough £2000 on a latop that's stopped working after just under 3 years of minimal and careful use.

How many more unhappy owners is it going to take?

Apple just released a Mavericks update with not even a glimmer of hope for us. Looks like "improved accuracy of unread counts in mail" is higher on the totem pole than something like "Complete system lockups due to faulty GPU". Apple is falling by the wayside without jobs at the helm.

I used to think that apple means quality, now I think that the apple products are just garbage, now I think that the quality is not important to apple, now I think that the only think that is important to apple is just earn a lot of money.

    VERY ODD!!

MBP 2011 HAS COME BACK TO LIFE!! I have been switching between graphics cards with no hassle with GFX card status program and no problem.

Had same issues as everyone else (+ more than some as the mac store could not even back my data up)

I didn't get the new logic board. I was going to send to the UK to get the reball etc.

I also was going to buy a new laptop but yesterday before ordering another laptop online I had remembered seeing a post on this thread about someone removing a Corsair 16 gig RAM and putting back the original ram into the computer and it booting up...

So I said f++k it I will try the same as I saw a receipt from a visit to the Mac store a few months ago on a table at home and it said 16 gig Corsair RAM also. Took out the 16 gig RAM the Mac store put in and put back the original...

Tried once last night and nothing, then today I booted up again when getting back from college and here I am typing away again..

Anyone know why I am back into my previously unreadable HDD and failed logic board MBP???
