Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Thats why I cant find it.

As for the work I was doing, nothing mindblowing or out of the ordinary. Surfing the web; Keynote; Tweetdeck. Nothing really pressing.

To add to the 230 pages of posts on this problem, my early 2011 17" MBP had one occurrence last week of the graphics anomaly. This week three with each resulting in a kernel panic or complete lock-up requiring reboot. Sometimes it boots. Sometimes it doesn't. I can't leave it on for long without it locking up with a plain gray screen.

I have too much tied up in software for Mac to make a hasty exit. To make it worse, I have a photo shoot this weekend and MUST have my computer for post processing.

I converted to Apple because of poor customer service and inconsistent quality. Looks like I've just paid more for the same.

Twitter is a great idea. I have been following this thread very closely. I read every entry notified by email. I have been receiving more and more notifications lately. Everyone should try and do their part, from signing, tweeting, posting pictures etc. Anything you can think of, Apple cant hide from us forever! Especially with the number of failing machines on the rise.

Just read this on Daring Fireball regarding Dropbox's arbitration clause and it hit home:

..."when a company takes advantage of a bunch of people all in the same small way (incorrectly assessing a service charge, for example), class action is how companies are made to clean up their act en masse, instead of waiting for thousands of people to call them up and demand their $20 back or whatever."

I have exactly the same problem with my macbook Pro with Core I7 2.0 ghz with radeon HD 6490M

I always bought Apple products for their quality and service (Imac 21,Macbook Pro,  Ipad 1, Ipad 4, Iphone 4, Iphone 5) and I always been a mac evangelist but if they cannot solve that ridiculous problem I'll sell everything, buy a new android phone, a tablet pc, and I'll make a lot of noise around me about that problem....

You cannot buy a 2000 Euro computer to get that kind of problem...

My mid 2011 MacBookPro has developed vertical lines on the screen ever since updating to 10.9. I took it in yesterday to Apple and the 'Genius' behind the bar told me it would cost $800 AU for a new logicboard. I paid $3200 for my laptop only a few years ago and now I'm paying more, for no fault of my own?

I got my first mac in 1996 and have been a strong supporter of them ever since - until now. This is ridiculous and should be a class action by now.

So I took my late 2011 MBP, which I bought in Feb 2012, to an Apple store on Tuesday and of course I already knew what they told me which was I would need a logic board replacement. Apparently my very small dent is according to them was *affecting my hard drive* which is a complete load of garbage and apparently worth an extra $300 bringing the price of my repair to $610.

Needless to say I won't be shopping for any Apple products again even if it's not for myself and I'm going to put mine on craigslist for a couple hundred bucks and hope someone buys it for spare parts otherwise I'm seriously considering taking a golf club to it to release some stress.

The only thing my laptop is good for at this point is a shiny paper weight since I can't do anything beyond turn it on.

My Macbook Pro 15" with AMD Radeon 6750 get this problem as well ... appears after installing Mavericks OSX, upgrade to 10.9.2 still does not fix this ...

I go to Apple Store Reseller, they check my macbook by connecting to Apple Server ... everything is OK there is no indicator of error in my hardware ... the Logic Board seems OK ...

Now my only way to use this MBP by using gfxStatusCard ... everytime if I lucky that I can boot, I have to change to Integrated Only ... if I shutdown and forget to change to this setting, the next time I reboot my machine, the problem appears...the grey or black screen while try accessing recovery 10.9 system ....

My discrete graphics sometimes I can still use it ... when the machine not too hot I guess ... but if I boot to Windows 7, the Windows OSX force my macbook using the discrete graphics, and it seems OK so far

The other problem, I cannot hook up to external display via HDMI adapter...which is still working on Mountain Lion ... but using VGA adapter is still working in Mavericks OSX ....

I asked QCD Singapore if in my case I have to replace logic board, they quote the price of replacement  for about S$1000 (US$ 900) ... I bought this machine for only 2 years.... now I have to decide to buy a new one ...

I still have the first generation macbook unibody (Steve Jobs era) ...and it is still works awesome until now, except the battery ...

The 2nd generation Apple dynasty seems to forget a philosophy of the Apple Co from the first generation...

During Steve Jobs era I almost never enter this discussions to find solutions for my Apple products ... for the last 6 months I active reading even this 200 pages discussions to find solutions with no hope ....

My other complains for Apple's products:

    - iOS 7.0.6 draining my iPhone 5S

    - the failure of original charging cable... I have 1 fail lightning cable, 1 fail old one ... but I still have the original USB charging cable from my 1st generation iPod Nano that still works awesome !

    - Mavericks OSX - a premature OSX ... with everything new .... force every user to update from the old OSX by stopping updating old iLife & iWorks versions .... giving a free and for Mavericks OSX only ....

I hope Apple will open their ear plugs again starting this year ...

Three days before, I went to a local repairing store and did a BGA reflow on my MC723 Macbook Pro. It costs me 800 CNY (approximately 130 USD) to replace it with a new HD6750M chip and do the reflow. Now my computer works perfectly.

Cannot stand Apple's warranty policy. For the computers which were already out of warranty, even the new repaired part will only get a 3-months warranty, with 4800 CNY (~=800 USD).

Hello, can you pls specify your location and details of the shop.Even I am looking to do the same here in Shanghai. Can it be reflowed with a higher numbered chip? Thanks.
