Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I found temperature matters a lot. Try to keep your mac cool with ice or something else...Then try to boot again...At least it works for mine.

Really? When my gets stuck booting I unplug the fans and let it over heat till it shuts down automatically, then I'm able to boot up just fine.

Unfortunately, I did a lot of research on the issue and could not find any solution for disabling the problem card (integrated or descrete) or designating which card can be used during boot up.

I just had to continue to boot and reboot until my MacBook Pro decided to boot up using the card that worked.

In the end, I just rebooted on rare occassion (about once a month on avergage) when it locked up or some situation forced a reboot.

Best of luck to you on the issue!

This is probably why the battery is also down the dump. The heat that fried the GPU probably is the main reason why the battery life is so horrible now (and the "Replace Now" message I keep getting from the battery)

    This manufacturing defect is presenting itself throughout the 2011 Macbook pro line up. It is well documented on many sites such as;

Some people are able to limp home by choosing integrated graphics card, some are able to continue by forking out enormous amounts of cash at either apple stores for the, what seems to be, generic "logic board" replacement.or recalls via third part reballse (tthat actually were to be a more effective solution).

In the UK we are lucky in that the previously referenced Sales of Goods Act largely protects us from this kind of shoddy practice, I hope that other countries are equally well protected as this debacle really has to reach conclusion.

Yes, the twitter, Facebook etc campaigns are effective, but more imports high, for me at I East, what on earth has gosh happened to Apple?

    I have

Yes i'm very disappointed, they are not even able to do a real repair, if i get another logic board it should not fail for the same part.

Let me join to the club.
MPB Late 2011 with 2.2 GHz proc and AMD 6750M.

    Same symptoms.

Being unaware of whole problem, and being in a big hurry (MBP is used for my work) I left my laptop in Apple non-authorised service (need to quick "reanimate" it)

They tried to replace GPU, I stopped them from logicboard change (after reading this thread).
Now working on internal GPU only and waiting for any long term solution to come.

Sad is, that if any recall will appear (hopefuly) i lost my chance - because non-authorised service.

I'm still waiting for good news from Apple before I'll go for a non-authorized GPU replacement, but i'm also starting being skeptical about Apple to ever begin a recall on the affected machines... And I also don't want to keep the laptop unused for too long.

In the meantime I started asking for quotes (for the GPU replacement), and also started telling people that Apple is no longer the company that used to be.

What's the point of buying a very expensive machine, if such a widespread fail is not acknowledged, and if with half of the money I can get a good laptop and the same awful treatment?

This issue is becoming increasingly frustrating.

I've been spending hours alone just trying to get it to turn on at this point.

Let me add myself to the list of affected users. Late 2011 MBP 17 2.4 ghz, with a Radeon 6770M. My symptoms fall in line with others here. I've been able to keep kernel panics at bay with gfxCardStatus and preventing graphics switching, though it's not at all an ideal scenario.

Thanks for the tips, tricks, and support in this thread-- they've helped a lot.

My Late 2011 MBP 15 with a 6770M started having these issues yesterday.  I can't even get it to boot, even in Safe mode.  Screen turns bright blue.  External or internal monitor.  Now what do I do, I paid a lot of money for this machine and it was supposed to last me 5 years.

My macbook pro also concs off after loading fFCP. since it connects to Adobe softwares....The MBP for adobe Applications is simply a piece of block. My Apple Service Centre advised me not to use Other applications referring to Adobe.... I have not purchased this machine weighing over 2 kg. to do routine work. I donot know how to load FCP, adobe premier and even photoshop on it. I am afraid of using iphoto.

Can anybody help.......and Save my Soul".................
