Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB memory

i'm from Malaysia, after living on restarting/gfxcardstatusing for 3-4 months my macbook wont boot to os anymore. i manually delete the ati driver, sometimes can go in but sometimes not until it is totally blank & i gave up. weeks after that i take my chances reballing the gpu and it working fine for now. Thanks a lot apple for making me solve your problem!

Did anyone that 'reballed' the mother board have problems afterwards? It sounds very scary to do this but comments so far seem to indicate that the 'reballers' are happy customers now? It really seems to do the trick?

Count me in guys. Even I'm a target of this issue (https://discussions.apple.com/message/25053874#25053874). I have a MBP 15" Early 2011. My system has stopped responding or even booting. Planning to take it to Apple Service Center. Apple should now respond to this issue.

BTW does anyone know the twitter tags or any discussion going on on social networks. Would just join in and help spread the word!!

Apparently it seems there is an online petition going on.

I'm not sure how helpful it will be but its worth giving a try!!

My mid 2011 15" MBP has also given up the ghost. It froze after sending most of my files to an external HDD as I was going to do a full factory reboot as my partners 13" MBP 2012 was much faster then my better specced 15"

Transferred the files, came back to the spinning wheel. Had to force shut down it then after that all I got was a grey screen or a blue screen with horizontal lines. Now I have had to have the whole motherboard/GPU replaced at a cost of over $1100NZD!

    Awesome...

just got my #MBP2011 to be fixed and the genius said that due to the age of the computer, chances for a recall are slim to none...

And therefore the chances of me buying another Apple product is also slim to none.

trust me, the age of the computer has no influence on the chances of a possible recall, there are iPod Nanos (1st generation, year 2005) still under replacement program.

It is the cost of the whole operation that matters! Replacing tons of logic boards, and then ending up having no other solution than giving a new hi-end laptop to everyone, it is a cost apple probably decided not to face.

Mine crashed aswell this weekend. Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011. I was aware of this issue before it actually happened to me as 2 of my friends also has had this happen to their computers. I'm having it re-balled tomorrow
and I hope that'll fix it for a while.. It will cost me 230 EUR.

If Apple doesn't take responsibility for this issue I'm not buying any of their products ever again.

    Done!

I am amazed after a bit more research to my problem that I manage to find a 230 page thread on the issue yet still no response from Apple on the problem...

Hey, I'm just another victim of this issue. My MBP won't boot since about two weeks now. Either blue vertical lines or grey screen. This is extremely frustrating because now I'm forced to write my bachelor thesis on a rather outdated windows machine my university provides me. I cannot afford the repair fees. Please Apple, just replace our Logic Boards!

I am looking at purchasing a used MBP with the 6750M and Intel chips from Macofalltrades.  Is there anyway to know if your model is affected?  I do NOT want to drop the $$ if it is most liekly going to die.  Is there any way to test and see if machine is free from this issue?  Thanks!
