Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    nattster,

Rather than replacing the logic board you may be better off finding a company in your area that can either reball your current GPU or get you a new GPU and resolder it. I'm sure that the price would be less and some companies, here in the US, are offering one-year warranties on their work: much better than Apple's 90-day guarantee.

Anyways, it is working for now, today however i noticed that when opening InDesign (or any app that would call upon the 6750 gpu) the screen tints slightly blue which to my knowledge, is NOT normal.

I wouldn't worry about the tint. I also had the problem a while ago with Mountain Lion and I traced it back to incorrect calibration data in the lookup tables for the discrete GPU. I don't remember the exact steps to fix that, though.

After 2 months with my completely failed early 2011 MBP resting beside me, not a word from Apple and reading a lot of posts on the pages here, I made up my mind that having the GPU reballed would be not only the cheapest way to get back to my computer but also the most promising. Doing it by myself in the oven I did not dare to - so it cost me 170 Euros here in Germany.

The first two days went fine - external Thunderbolt display works - to me the indicated temperatures of CPU and GPU seem to be a little lower than before. There was not one failed part in the computer which had to be replaced. No CPU, no GPU, not even a capacitor or resistor. IMHO I assume that this problem is solely based on arising electrical contact problems of the external GPU due to thermal stress on the motherboard. I will find out whether the repair will help for more than 90 (Apple)days…

    Hy Gärch,

could you please post the name/location/url of the service you sent it to for repair?

    thanks

I would argue that Apple failed to ensure that the product met a satisfactory level of quality.

Run it on integrated one and wait for Apple action - They released replacement program for iMacs - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167?viewlocale=en_US

We believe they will do same for MBP.

Just got off the phone with Apple Customer Support.  The price they quoted me was US$330 to do the repair, since this was not caused by my actions I would not be paying for the logic board or gpu replacement - I just have to pay for the out-of-waranty repair fee.

Hey JGH — are you able to give your name and repair reference number from Apple?

I'm new to this thread from MacInTouch, having recently purchased a recon 2011 MBP from Apple in the USA.

    Sheesh.

I'm hoping someone can take the time to answer some questions no doubt already answered in the 259 pages here.

My unit has a 6770M graphics card: most of this discussion centers around the 6750M. Am I in the clear?

Also, what does it mean that this discussion has been 'branched' to a thread I am not permitted to read (see top of page)?

    Hey Matt,

So I tried this and rebooted, but I am now getting kernel panic- and since I can't get to recovery mode I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Has anyone tried using 10.9.3 beta? I'm using it right now and with gfxCardStatus and automatic graphics switching. Will give you guys update on how well it does with this discrete GPU bug.
