Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

I've recently had my logicboard replaced due to the GPU fault and am concerned it may fail soon after the 90 day warranty period.  (If it lasts the 2-3 years like the old one, I will be happy with that.)  So I think I might take the advice of others who said they stress test it over a number of days to see if it will hold up.

Any advice on a simple way of stress testing it?  Note that I use it for work during business hours so need something to run in the background if it should be going 24/7.

    @konishkichen

Get on the phone to Applecare support and explain the situation like @triffski did. Remain calm but firm. My Applecare expired 2 weeks ago but a chat with the Japanese Applecare rep got me a free logic board replacement (as it should have - dying 2 weeks out of warranty is unacceptable for a premium product). The first rep will likely give you the standard lines and make you pay, so make sure you start speaking technically and get elevated to an engineer or someone with the authority to give you a free repair.

Good luck and report back with your results!

Now this is disgusting. Apple just removed my post from here because I posted link to the petition (to replace faulty macbooks) so apple is trying hard to neglect what customers are facing andthey want us not to raise our voices. I am going to boycot there products from onwards and will tell everyone not to buy any product from apple becuase they are faulty due to manufacturing faults.

    Following is the email:

    Hi Faryaz,

Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities.

We removed your post Re: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card because it contained a poll or a petition.

@tremor16: Thanks! I called the support and they agreed to replace it under AppleCare since it happened on a Sunday (last day of AppleCare with no option to call them) and I went to the store the next day. I will take the Macbook to the Apple Store tomorrow to have it repaired. I keep my fingers crossed it'll work after that!

Great to hear! That's stage one complete . Now you have to try and make sure it's fixed for the longer term. Just a 90 day warranty on repairs!

Many credit cards (American Express, for example) offer an extra 1 year warranty on purchases.

Does anyone know a reason why that would not apply to service hardware such as a logic board replacement?

Anyone have experience with such a situation?

    Edit:

Amex provides "up to" an additional 1 year warranty. More is explained here:

    http://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/card-benefits/extended-warranty/faq.ht ml

Just left mine with apple today at a cost of £408

Apparently if bought in the eu then the fault is covered by the consumer goods act.

I urge anyone to quote this in store.

Unfortunately I bought mine in the US so I had no option to but to pay.

I have escalated this by speaking to a store manager and emailing Tim cook and the store leader.

Hope apple resolves this. It is more than frustrating.

You can add me on the list. MBPro 17" early 2011 after 2 years and 11 (!!!) months.

But i got Apple Care, logic board changed free of charge.

Bonus: I got a new battery, under apple care. The first battery was completly dead after about 30 cycles (faulty battery out of the box)

I brought my faulty MBP 15" to an Authorized Service Provider. They diagnosed the same problem and the exchange of the logic board would cost 655 Euros (about 800 USD)!!

This is hugely disappointing for a device that originally cost 2000 Euros and is only 2 years and 4 months old.

Mine died on the 93rd day after I got it back. Apple said I was past the 90 days and I would have to pay again. Apparently the store sends it out and they can not force the vendor to fix it after 90 days.

Hi, actually, I didn't try to put mine to sleep, but others here had the same issue. I guess that is because your MacBook "thinks" that it's working with an external display.

The only way I know to properly work with your MacBook now is installing Ubuntu as it was described here.

Yesterday I run full AppleHardwareTest and got this :

         4SNS/1/4000001: IGOR-0.004

Moreover, as I'm using gfxCardStatus I can manually switch between integrated and discrete card, since last week this feature became not possible. Doesn't matter what I choose, integrated card works all the time.

The most frustrating thing that I run out of warranty in the end of December and the problem appeared a month later.

What should I do in that situatuion?

Read back a few pages through this thread and you'll see that there are several folks who have had the logic board replaced by Apple only to have the same issue reappear.  And even more concern that some have had logic boards replaced multiple times.
