Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

And a +1 from me as well.

Any idea how to fix this? I will have a look in the discussion but I'm not able to read ~300 pages.

    Amazing Apple, really amazing.

I have found that removing the files ATIRadeonX2000.kext and ATDRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle is all that is needed for my system (killing all of them as suggested in the fb post might be too much).

I have the same issue now. Most likely I will never be Apple's customer again.

That's how a lot of us feel. This is the worst experience that I have ever had with an Apple product and it's compounded by the fact that there are so many others having the same experience and Apple will not 'own up,' as they have in the past, about a defect. And I don't think that anything is going to make them budge from that point.

After 36 years of being an Apple customer, this will be my last Mac - last Apple product, period. When it dies I already have a Windows laptop that I'm using now.

Well... I've decided to go the reball route.

After hearing all the chatter on here about people who've had theirs repaired by Apple only to have it fail again within a short period of time, I decided that the reball route may be the best bet for me.  And it was cheaper.  Found a vendor on eBay with excellent feedback who will, in their words "install a brand new updated NVIDIA GPU which supersedes older models", correctly apply thermal paste and reball the thing for $179.

Time will tell if I've done the correct thing or not but as the saying goes, "hope springs eternal..."

    Catrancher,

Can you copy and paste the eBay url to guide us to this repair center? I had bookmarked on in CA but it's no longer listed...

Don't know if Apple will leave it up or not.  Anyway this should be it.

My friends 2011 MBP has just developed the GPU fault.

intermitent booting, black vertical glitch on screen, freezing and blue screens.

He just took it to the Apple Store in Amsterdam a few hours ago and the want €400+ tax to repair.

He is feeling pretty desperate as this is his work machine and he is a artist and not ina postion to replace or repair.

My own 2011 MBP has just expired from Apple care last week.

I hope Apple do the decent thing and acknowledge their is a genuine issue and start a repair program.

Add mine to the list too. My Early 2011 15" pulled exactly that proble on my about one month ago.
I got Apple to change the main board under Apple Care just before it expired (last week). But the new main board they gave me is 10 times more unstable that the one I came in with!

Now it's absolutely impossible to use the discrete graphics card for more than a couple minutes before the display becomes nonsensical. gfxCardStatus is helping me maintaining it on the integrated chip, but I can't work on my external screen anymore because of that. I have to squint hard to be able to work from the laptop's screen.

I have to take it back to the Genius Bar, but I'm under heavy deadlines now and I can't not have working machine for another week or I'll lose both my current jobs. The repair was covered by Apple Care but the plan expired the day I took it in. I hope the repair itself is under warranty though, because I don't see how ut's not Apple's fault that they sold me a defective computer and that their repair is ineffective.

I'm also afraid even if they change the board again it won't do anything because all 2011 boards with the ATI chip seem likely doomed. I really hope they give me a 2012 board instead.
