Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Thanks for the advice, will try hamburg4, although I have not got AppleCare. Also been to Comspot and Firstbite... same diagnosis, same price... to be fair, its approx EUR 580. Maybe I should also try Gravis...

I guess, just dropping them a mail is enough...if you tell them you're affected by the 2011 GPU issue, too?!?

    Hello there,

for the guys in Germany, another person wrote this:

    UPDATE:

I wrote earlier about the same issue everyone is having with the MBP 2011. I was not ready to pay 500-900USD for the logic board to be replaced... Being that I am in Europe currently, I searched and found a bunch of companies in Germany that offer the service of replacing the graphic chip. I was quoted anything from 140 to 275 euros, I opted for a company in Furt, Germany (Wit Comp) @ 165,- being that they offer 12 mo. warranty.

The MBP is back, it has a VOID sticker on one of the backpanes screws, 12mo. warranty, it works perfect up until now... I will write an update as time goes by if any issues arrise.

    I hope this helps someone.

    Regards,

    Maybe can help you.

Macbook Pro 2011 Bought in March, no apple care, thought I was buying a quality product

13 months later, one month out of warranty, at my own expense I replaced the fan + battery + logic board

Early 2014 = replacement logic board failed

Thanks Mr. Recordman for that tip... will think about it, as I will definitely won´t pay 580 Euro for a part with a three month warranty and a problem that could occur again.

I am also having the same problem with my macbook pro it some time crash's and in some cases i get vertical line. I have take it the apple services center they have done the pram reset. It worked fine for 3 days and then I have started using the xcode for development I have stared facing the same problem GPU failures.

This is as issues that Apple need's to take care of. I have purchased in India at cost 1,09,000(2,400$) With this price I could have purchased 4 windows laptops. I have paid such high price for longer and high performence. Now that my GPU keep's on failing I have lost the performence.

Tim cook has to give us a solutions for this issues.

In the mean time if there are any temporary solutions for this would be great. I am developer and I cant invest such amount to buy a new one again.

Greetings from Hamburg/Germany, I´m adding my MBP 15“ early 2011 to the list. 600 EUR to fix the problem, 3 months guarantee, Apple this is ridiculous !

They won't get away with the 3 months warranty in Europe as the general absolute minimum is 6 months. Trying to undermining that will automatically grant you the full warranty. However it's very annoying having to deal with morons in shops who do not even know the very basic customer rights. If it breaks again after such a repair I wouldn't start any lengthy discussions and rather quickly head to some professional who can enforce your rights.

I paid 590,67€ at Gravis in Munich. Worst service experience ever! Took them 2 full weeks to diagnose and fix. If it breaks again, definitely write a mail to Apple CEO and wait for executive relations to contact you; at least my contact knew and immediately acknowledged the basic consumer rights (and that Apple products are not supposed to break that early) and made sure that even after the bogus 3 months warranty Gravis would replace the logic board again without much discussion and actually quite a lot quicker; however they forgot to connect one speaker so I had to show up another time...

Have you found out how to disable universally the External Display in Safe Boot mode, which actually does not exist?

    I have the same problem.

    Hi all,

I deactivated the AMD gpu by moving all AMD* files. Now with the INTEL onboard chip, I'm able to boot into my system, but have still some graphic artefacts. See screenshot below.

Any one else with those INTEL problems?

    Thx, Florian

Thanks tremor16. I have the same problem yesterday and can't boot my early 2011 macbook pro. I followed your instruction to "heat" mac and wait for it turn off automatically. After its turned off, quickly remove my mac from bag and turn it on. Luckily it can bot using integrated GPU. And immediately using gfxCardStatus to switch to Integrated GPU.

I'll wait Apple's response, hope they will recall this model.

I have a totally black screen on startup. I am not able to check an external monitor to see if that works. I'm in a third world country where I do not have access to the cables I need to do so. I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 17". The black screen happened when I was working on a word press theme. What about you? What have you found out about this issue?
